Haha wasn't expecting that question!
The only way I can think of that would make me change my beliefs would be if another religions main deity appeared out of thin air in front of me and said something along the lines of "Hello Dallas. I know you are a strong believer of the Christian faith but I am hear to guide you from that path onto the path you should be on."
And then again, even if that happened, I would be wondering if Satan as playing a trick on me or something like that.

Well the Bible does say that even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

I answered the trick question.

Translation
Hello! Would you be interested in joining the church of latter day saints?
But I already believe in science? Although many of the "theories" they share seem a bit... iffy to me. I wonder why they decided to call them "theories".
-
You misunderstand the word theory. And you were slightly misinformed on what it is. In laymen's terms, theory is closer to idea or speciation. However, in the scientific context, a scientific theory is tells us how and why an observed phenomenon (a law) happens. A law is a description of a observed phenomenon, a theory tells us how and why. They are separate, and one does not become the other. Scientific theory is literally the highest "rank" a scientific explanation can attain.
-
A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that is acquired through the scientific method and repeatedly tested and confirmed through observation and experimentation. taken from Wikipedia A theory is middle ground between a hypothesis and a scientific law; it's been tested to be true and is thought by the scientific community to be true but hasn't been in existence/tested enough to be considered a law.
-
Close but no cigar. A law is a description of a observed phenomenon, a theory tells us how and why that phenomenon occurs. They are separate, and one does not become the other. Scientific theory is literally the highest "rank" a scientific explanation can attain.
-
Thanks for the correction. Learned about the scientific method a couple years back so I forgot some of the terms.
-
Aww but I like cigars :(

-
God cannot be a scientific hypothesis as it's impossible to do any tests about him.

Edited by SSG ACM: 5/28/2015 8:22:06 PMHe has thousands to (perhaps) millions of individuals that talk about his existence. He has a book that often dictates his mentality and his well-exhibited honesty. He's found in textbooks, historical studies, and he is also referenced in non-biblical materials as well as the personal testimonies that he has influenced upon the people that he has touched and the nation that he has helped to establish.
-
That's why it is, because you can not prove it false, because you can't do test on it.
-
If you mean hypothesis as in an idea then yes, God would be one. I'll need Britton Nye the Science Guy to confirm but I'm pretty sure that a hypothesis in the scientific term has to be testable otherwise it isn't scientific.
-
A hypothesis is a suggested solution for an unexplained occurrence that does not fit into current accepted scientific theory. The basic idea of a hypothesis is that there is no pre-determined outcome. For a hypothesis to be termed a scientific hypothesis, it has to be something that can be supported or refuted through carefully crafted experimentation or observation.
supported or refuted through carefully crafted experimentation or observation.
It's impossible for God to be observed or experimented up. God can't be a hypothesis then.
Why are we talking about this still?
Exactly.
because ive been traveling since yesterday and this is keeping me sane ATM
Edited by Britton: 5/28/2015 7:29:52 PMIts like intellectual exercise for me. I use it as a place to challenge my own level of understanding by analyzing and looking into what others say.

So let's start with a rather familiar theory then. The Big Bang. What caused this big bang?
-
There are no scientific theories to its cause yet.
-
Hard to say but there are many ways scientists thought it happened. . The general idea is that there was a large concentration of matter in an extremely small space. Eventually, the matter began to expand at a large rate, which has been observed (the expansion of the universe has been observed.). But what exactly caused the Big Bang is up for debate. All we know is that the universe was at one point small then started to grow exponentially. As we learn more about space and physics we'll uncover what caused the Big Bang. This, of course, is if we're able to comprehend it, like how we can't comprehend non-existence.
