For once, I have to agree with IGN(orant).
I understand why Bungie made Etheric Light so rare, and it's a two-fold reason.
1) They didn't want everyone hitting 34 in the first week. (Understandable)
2) The rarity is a delicate balance. Just rare enough that it entices you to play more, but not so rare that it seems to be like a second job in order to get even one piece of Etheric Light.
Unfortunately (as with the rest of the game until present), Bungie has no idea about how to properly balance the grind vs. reward ratio. They've hit the latter part of point 2. They've made the Etheric Light so rare that it is far too difficult and offered in far too little activities with far too little of a drop chance. They've made it such a chore to get, that for many people it is killing the drive to play now.
There's plenty of people in my situation. I've played for two weeks now and still haven't seen a single piece of Etheric Light drop.
Now; there are plenty of people who have three 34's, all weapons upgraded, and Etheric Light to spare. But Bungie missed the target audience on this one (unless their target audience is between the ages of 12-16, out of school with 16 spare hours to grind out that much Light...). Most people don't have the 10-12 hours at a pop to grind out Etheric Light to get all of their equipment upgraded in a week. Hell, most people don't even have that kind of free time on the weekends.
A possible fix would be to keep the guaranteed Etheric Light "gift" of the 34 and 35 Prison of Elders, but add in a drop chance for the small chests at the end of the 28 and 32 Prison runs. Increase the chance for a drop for the Nightfall and the Crucible (hell, add in a chance for a drop in the Crucible) as well as the Iron Banner once it starts up again. An increase of 10, 15, or even 20 percent along with the additional places to get it would make the grind much less agonizing overall, and would have the added effect of making people want to play more than they do now.
Making the Etheric Light the carrot at the end of the stick is one thing. But you've got to use a shorter stick. nobody will want the carrot if they can't even see it at the end of the stick.
As it stands right now, there's nothing in sight to chase after, and it just kills the desire to play.
Edit 1 (of what will probably be the first of several edits...): I fully know where to currently get Etheric Light, that's not the issue. the issue is the time it takes to get even one piece. Most people only have 2-3 hours to play per night. Therefore, most people find it very difficult to "do everything in all characters per week" like you kids on summer break are getting more than twelve hours to accomplish.
Edit 2: PvP isn't everyone's strong-suit, nor is so easy as "git gud skrub". Those of you who say "it's a cakewalk to go 9-0 in the trials and get 3 EL per character per week" should probably quit talking. You're only making yourselves look ignorant, not like the PvP-gods you think you are.
Edit 3: ironBill posted this, and he clarifies the intent of this post nicely.
FWIW, I couldn't care less about getting through ToO. Really, I'm finding I don't care about hitting 34 on all characters either. No point to it. Just so we know who we both are.
The OP is talking about play balance, and whether or not Bungie is hitting their market, which I happen to find is a great point. Who IS the demographic? Are they trying for a very select subset of skills to reward this time around? Sure seems that way. Good PvP players are strutting around like they invented fire... happy for 'em too I guess, but if that's all this DLC is intended to give us, my question follows - is that all there is to this?
Edit 4: Calling me a "scrub" doesn't do anything as I really don't care. All you're doing by slinging names like that is highlighting the lack of strength in your argument.
Edit 5: pablogordon had another great idea. I've quoted it here to give it some love.
There should have been an exchange rate at the speaker for Etheric light. Baffling really that it's not there.
Make it really expensive. The most expensive thing in the game currently is that ship from Petra at what, 17.5k glimmer? Make the Etheric light cost that plus one each of the radiants, and ten each of the ascendants, and some coins and motes for good measure. The speaker exchange was a very good step in the right direction to sinking some currencies, especially Friday when Xur sold the helm engrams and now that most everyone has a couple few weapons they want to re-roll.
Why not just add the Etheric light? If we are really honest, the point isn't just hitting max anymore (and thankfully so) but putting together a setup with both the perks and looks that suit your play style!
Edit 6: And, here's a link for why the PoE loot system is broken in general, but parallels well with the rarity of Ethereal Light.

Edit 7: FatChubbE offers a very good breakdown of what the responsible adult Gamer deals with in trying to overcome the base design of this DLC. It is an accurate description, and props go to him for it.
The adults I play this game with aren't always on. Three are full time Grad students with jobs, two are parents with wives and kids. My son plays between school and football practice and games when he's not doing chores or homework. The full time gamers in my clan have all partnered up, so getting help from them is difficult. The "it's easy" comments applies only to those with spare time. We did one nightfall and one 32 prison of elders. That's all we had time for. Don't get me wrong, the etheric light is there. It's obtainable. But it's not obtainable "easy". Easy when applied to time spent obtaining does not bode well for the working/school demographic. It applies only to destiny players who play destiny for hours on end every day. To put it into perspective we did (two) ToO matches. that's right 2. We were not in control of the time. With loading, and 5 round matches, two matches took an hour. If you do 8 and win flawlessly without the other team winning a single point, 3 hours at least grinding for an etheric light. If you add a 34 or 35 prison of elders and you're a super stud team that's another 2 hours with loading, game time, running back to the airlock. And 2 hours is giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're really really good. If you're average, add at least another hour or two. So the argument that it's "easy" is a matter of perspective. Easy as far as skill level? Or easy as a matter of "I got all the time I need to play?" Either way, getting etheric light takes more time than any other currency we've been offered thus far. That's just how it is. People took days off to play this. Which kind of gives you an idea of the commitment to time you have to invest to receive these "easy" rewards.
Edit 8: IIFormer GamerII also has a great take on the time sink necessary and the base design of these DLC.
You are without a doubt correct when it comes to grinding through the same content three times over in Destiny, and the annoyances, redundancy, sheer boredom, and time consumption that comes along with it. After playing through the base game and TDB I've come to realize that destiny simply isn't a game that can be played causally, and if you attempt to do so you should be prepared to put yourself at an extreme disadvantage. This was my main reason for intentionally skipping out on HoW, because I knew that the never ending grind would continue.
If you have a lot of spare time on your hands, Destiny is a great game to play with clan mates. But truth be told you cannot simply play destiny in a casual manner such as battlefield or call of duty, without hindering your progression dramatically and being seen as a "slacker," "leech," or a "freeloader."
Destiny's new loot looks nice, but I just can't take the grind anymore.
Edit 9: To all the people telling us that not everyone should be able to get to end-game content, or that parts of the game should be locked except for the "hardcore" crowd: So having entire portions of the game locked out to a player simply for no other reason than Bungie feeling the need to promote elitist alienation of their player base... is ok?
The only thing more wrong than Bungie's "philosophy" are the people who jump at any chance to support it.
-
Campaign all three characters you'll get plenty. Plus the PoE is super easy and gives you light as well.
-
That's why I have 2 34's and like 5 ascended legendaries. I barely play
-
-
Its so easy to get the 34 I have 3 different classes that are all 34 with lots of spare ethric light
-
I dont think is rare... You can get one by openning the trials cards, you dont even need to do 9-0... And then, there is the prison of elders 34 and 35
-
Edited by Sapid: 5/29/2015 3:01:18 PMI'm mean, I've got 6 and I've used about 4. It's not that bad... EDIT: this is also from running 2 characters, but subtract the second and I still would've had around 3-4 week one.
-
You only need two I only need one because of Osiris snuff
-
It's easiest to get from ToO and PoE use destiny tracker to find a good team for both
-
So easy I got lvl 34 on hunter, titan and warlock on day 2
-
Lmao if you think it's hard to get ethric light you must not have played vanilla destiny
-
Well you can get 6 etheric lights per week with just doing PoE And you get 1 from the gold tier package and going flawless in trials That's about 12 per week Which should be enough
-
dude I have like four spare etheric light!!! I have all three characters to 34 and already upgraded like five or six guns, play on all three characters on prison of elders and trials of Osiris
-
They did it so the game will last until October.
-
Etheric light is too easy to obtain. Hell vanilla destiny lvl 30 was a pain in the ass to get to. Crota was easier to hit 32 and now 34 can be done in as little as one day. Etheric light is to common
-
People hit 34 day one.
-
(This is for the OP) As far as you (the OP) saying you need to grind for however many hours for pieces of etheric light...bro. You need 2 pieces at most 1st week. 1 the 2nd. And 0 3rd because you'll have 3 house of judgment armor pieces that are 42 light. Your exotic can go 42 with an exotic shard. And like I said you get a damn armor core from the arena that turns into a 42 light gear piece. Do it again this week you have 2 legendary pieces with 42 light. Now either wait til next week and get another or find 33s or 34s that will help you with the 34, get some etheric light and you're 34. It's not that serious for you to try to get the drop rate to increase ALREADY after 1 week of playing. You're tripping. The same as people had to wait to get raid gear for Crota you're gonna have to wait to be 34. The OP doesn't even make a valid case. Especially considering this is !ONLY WEEK TWO! of the DLC. Imagine if Crota & Atheon dropped all gear in 1 run. Ppl wouldn't raid as much. You don't have to try to grind for etheric. It's optional to level your armor. Weapons is another story but you'll be 34 next week and can run the 34s then. It's the same concept as raiding. Be patient.
-
If you play all the content weekly including trials you would've been 34 in the first week. I can say that confidently because I was 34 in the opening week of HoW. I also had 2 guns upgraded to 365 in the same time frame. It's not hard to get etheric light it just requires you to do all the content not just pick and choose what you want to do.
-
It's guaranteed to drop at 34 and 35 once a week per character. That's 6 in a week, it's not rare when it's guaranteed. You just need to stop crying, put your big boy pants on and go get them.
-
It's too easy compared to before
-
Like everything else in this game some are able to receive more than others randomly. I was soloing the nightfall last night thinking. "Really the only thing I need is the etheric light." And of course I got a shitty machine gun. One more nightfall left to do. Hopefully an etheric light will drop. There are many that post how "easy" it is to get. But what's not easy for all is having nothing to do in life except play destiny. Lots of us have jobs and last night was an example of the limited time for an average working player. 2 hours of play time maybe on a work night . The rest is preparing food, shopping, laundry, and making sure the house is in order. There's no way in hell I'll be able to upgrade my favorite armor/weapons in a short amount of time. I see players with 3 34's and I realize these are probably people with limited responsibility. That's fine. I just hope I'll still be interested in a couple weeks.
-
Funny you kept editing for the comments or w.e else and it's a game they want you to keep playing and buying it's meant for little kids who have all day after school to play not grown people with jobs
-
Edited by Sethpe: 5/27/2015 8:00:24 PMGet armor core, level one of your characters exotics. You are now 33, run lvl 34 and beat it (it's super easy) you have etheric light. Saying it's hard to get it even though it's a 100% chance in 34 is stupid. Like come on people, IGN is still being IGNorant. and they sound about as bad as the guys on the stream
-
Just collect armor cores and do Poe 34 when it is do able
-
Firstly, I don't typically go off of writers anymore. Too many of them have presented falsified ideals for me to consider it integrity driven. All the same, I'll read the article to highlight what the growing concerns are of the writer. Scratch that. I don't watch video commentary anymore. Etheric light and obtaining it. Firstly. It is guaranteed. In PoE each week. The formula for anyone starting at level 30 with a Vog raid or a CE set or a combination of both: Get to 32 and by extension 34. 1. Go to the Tower and find which faction gear you like the most. It doesn't matter which. Crucible, Vanguard, DO, FWC, NM. Pick one and now look at the requirements for them. If you find yourself a PvE player? You might be more enticed with vanguard. Maybe you are a crucible player? Go with crucible or FWC. 2. Once a faction is chosen, buy their class items. They accomplish faction reward gains of armor or weapons AND accumulate quickly. 3. Complete all activities up to level 30 difficulty each week. In 2 weeks time? You will have an entire set of Light +36 gear guaranteed IF you did ALL the bounties for a given element 4 times a week AND accumulated a single Exotic Shard to upgrade a single exotic armor piece. Most likely? You will get multiple exotic shards from Xur alone. 4. At 31 1/2 AND 32, you gain access to 32 PoE with a much more valuable Armor Core drop and a +42 light armor piece. Whatever your exotic or otherwise piece was for that slot? Remove it and place your new armor in the slot. If you need teammates and lfg isn't working? Level 28 matchmaking, get two other 32's or even better a 33, and request their help. You will be very surprised at how many "Ok. Send an invite." you will get after a few matches. 5. At 33, you grab two others and complete the level 34 PoE. This isn't particularly hard because it nets you a guaranteed Ethic Light as a reward. Not a drop from the chest possibility. You do this for one week. At present... That's 2 +42 legendary armor via armor cores. 1 + 42 exotic for a single exotic shard drop in the helmet or boots section. And now the final piece of etheric light. You are now 34 after three weeks of playing 4 times a week. Sorry. There's nothing wrong with that formula. It's a game. Don't rush to the endgame content. I tell everyone the same thing: Bungie needs, at minimum, 3 months to build the next experience. In those 3 months you have basically three goals they set each time: 1. Achieve the maximum light level. 2. Complete all of the endgame content at least once for grimoire and rewards. 3. Enjoy the various activities you did before. Maybe you like hunting down treasure keys? My recommendation is don't. You don't want to have three characters with five slots of max special ammo. Trust me. Besides... it only gives you a 331 gun for HoW you still have to upgrade to 365. Forget it. That's what you want to hunt AFTER you've gone 9-0 with a team in Trials of Osiris, beaten Skolas' sorry kester to the moon where he met another wizard, and later this year beaten the HoW raid and prepared your inner guts that the next one is definitely going to be a very painful and scorching experience... because it's the Cabal one... I still get goosebumps thinking about that. The Cabal... raid... ehhhhhhhhhh... yeah.... those guys... one level higher then me with the health and damage bars they have just on patrol... oh yeah. The Wolves? You are cute and cuddly puppies compared to the possibilities of the Cabal hitting the field in a raid...
-
You can get at least 15 a week guaranteed, not scarce at all!

Edited by blalejo: 5/29/2015 2:44:08 AM3/4 of the people on my friends list hit 34 in the first 24 hrs. Edit 1: after 36 hours everyone except me hit 34.
