Etheric Light is too rare, and it kills the desire to play.

For once, I have to agree with IGN(orant). I understand why Bungie made Etheric Light so rare, and it's a two-fold reason. 1) They didn't want everyone hitting 34 in the first week. (Understandable) 2) The rarity is a delicate balance. Just rare enough that it entices you to play more, but not so rare that it seems to be like a second job in order to get even one piece of Etheric Light. Unfortunately (as with the rest of the game until present), Bungie has no idea about how to properly balance the grind vs. reward ratio. They've hit the latter part of point 2. They've made the Etheric Light so rare that it is far too difficult and offered in far too little activities with far too little of a drop chance. They've made it such a chore to get, that for many people it is killing the drive to play now. There's plenty of people in my situation. I've played for two weeks now and still haven't seen a single piece of Etheric Light drop. Now; there are plenty of people who have three 34's, all weapons upgraded, and Etheric Light to spare. But Bungie missed the target audience on this one (unless their target audience is between the ages of 12-16, out of school with 16 spare hours to grind out that much Light...). Most people don't have the 10-12 hours at a pop to grind out Etheric Light to get all of their equipment upgraded in a week. Hell, most people don't even have that kind of free time on the weekends. A possible fix would be to keep the guaranteed Etheric Light "gift" of the 34 and 35 Prison of Elders, but add in a drop chance for the small chests at the end of the 28 and 32 Prison runs. Increase the chance for a drop for the Nightfall and the Crucible (hell, add in a chance for a drop in the Crucible) as well as the Iron Banner once it starts up again. An increase of 10, 15, or even 20 percent along with the additional places to get it would make the grind much less agonizing overall, and would have the added effect of making people want to play [i][b]more[/i][/b] than they do now. Making the Etheric Light the carrot at the end of the stick is one thing. But you've got to use a shorter stick. nobody will want the carrot if they can't even see it at the end of the stick. As it stands right now, there's nothing in sight to chase after, and it just kills the desire to play. [b][u]Edit 1[/u][/b] (of what will probably be the first of several edits...)[b]:[/b] I fully know [u]where[/u] to currently get Etheric Light, that's not the issue. the issue is the [u]time[/u] it takes to get even one piece. Most people only have 2-3 hours to play per night. Therefore, most people find it very difficult to "do everything in all characters per week" like you kids on summer break are getting more than twelve hours to accomplish. [b][u]Edit 2:[/u][/b] PvP isn't everyone's strong-suit, nor is so easy as "git gud skrub". Those of you who say "it's a cakewalk to go 9-0 in the trials and get 3 EL per character per week" should probably quit talking. Easy as far as skill level? Or easy as a matter of "I got all the time I need to play?" Either way, getting etheric light takes more time than any other currency we've been offered thus far. That's just how it is. People took days off to play this. The only thing more wrong than Bungie's "philosophy" are the people who jump at any chance to support it.

  • Agreed! I think you should have a chance at one in the little chests in PoE. Lvl 34 and 35 have etheric drops (the only reason I do PoE) but the other two are a waste of time. Unless you've grinded for hours in the end for keys, you get barely anything as a reward. So much time and effort for so little. Even if you have a key it's for a chance at something. Hell, you have a better chance at getting something just playing strikes, ToO or Crucible for a hell of a lot less effort. PoE was fun at first but once I have my last 34 I will not be playing it again. It will be back to the raids, crucible and strikes for me. Hell, I would rather deal with the lag-switch cheaters in ToO rather than spend hours in PoE for a couple of coins and motes of light!

              The worst part is the only way to obtain it is to subscribe to their failed policy of playing matches with groups you find out of the game. Time to get to The Witcher 3, people.

                • I've made this point before ... RNG needs to be changed in game so the random part is modified a bit. How many times have you finished at the top of the leaderboard only to see the very worst player get the best gear drop? If I kill a dragon in Dragon Age, I get relevant loot to what I've just done. I get dragon stuff that I can take to a smith or other vendor and have forged into something really cool!!! If I complete nightfall in Destiny, the most common outcome is that I instantly shard every piece of crap that drops. Why isn't the reward more relevant to the activity??? I agree with OP. It is killing the drive to play. As I spent virtually all weekend grinding for treasure keys, I found ZERO!!! A friend on my fireteam received 11 keys during the same farming time. Why is that at all fair??? It kills the drive to play. I love Destiny. The actual gameplay mechanics and raids in particular are super fun. However, if I spend too much more time grinding grinding grinding only to be left empty handed I will eventually reach a breaking point and give up.

                    • I completely agree. Not only is everything in general about the loot system completely stupid, the chances are so rare there is almost no possibility of getting what you want. Also, POE level 35 is just a grind and seriously way to difficult for average players. Only if you are extremely good or cheese it will you be able to win. I have won, but I know plenty of people who simply aren't good enough, and this game shouldn't rely on all randomness and luck. I've almost given up on this game. It's a piece of sh*t, and I really hope bungie realizes that at some point in their lives.

                      • I agree with this post, my friends actually playing the game went from over 70 online during the launch of HOW then the reality of getting a 365 fatebringer hit and it's dropped to less than 20 again. No one wants the grind nor has the time for it. Friends that have already hit level 34 can't be bothered helping anyone lower level because the rewards are not worth the hassle. If bungie do not start listening to its gamers or any of the other news websites that are not impressed then this game will not last a year let alone ten.

                          • Yeah, the system is really bad - for this and the keys. I'm so surprised that this is actually the system that they went with as a solution to the whole mechanic for these items.

                                • Bump* and wanted to say hi! Haven't seen you around like back in the day vampire nox. Really great post. I am happy also for PVP to have rewards. But this dlc is obviously more then making up for past non-rewarding PVP activities. It is absolutely unbalanced. So I assume destiny is going in the direction of just PVP. Or bungie just can't balance the game? No I don't believe that for a minute. They are demographically targeting PVP for a very smart monetary gain direction from a business stand point. Pve is obviously not cutting it for the share holders and activision. RIP pve..
