For once, I have to agree with IGN(orant).
I understand why Bungie made Etheric Light so rare, and it's a two-fold reason.
1) They didn't want everyone hitting 34 in the first week. (Understandable)
2) The rarity is a delicate balance. Just rare enough that it entices you to play more, but not so rare that it seems to be like a second job in order to get even one piece of Etheric Light.
Unfortunately (as with the rest of the game until present), Bungie has no idea about how to properly balance the grind vs. reward ratio. They've hit the latter part of point 2. They've made the Etheric Light so rare that it is far too difficult and offered in far too little activities with far too little of a drop chance. They've made it such a chore to get, that for many people it is killing the drive to play now.
There's plenty of people in my situation. I've played for two weeks now and still haven't seen a single piece of Etheric Light drop.
Now; there are plenty of people who have three 34's, all weapons upgraded, and Etheric Light to spare. But Bungie missed the target audience on this one (unless their target audience is between the ages of 12-16, out of school with 16 spare hours to grind out that much Light...). Most people don't have the 10-12 hours at a pop to grind out Etheric Light to get all of their equipment upgraded in a week. Hell, most people don't even have that kind of free time on the weekends.
A possible fix would be to keep the guaranteed Etheric Light "gift" of the 34 and 35 Prison of Elders, but add in a drop chance for the small chests at the end of the 28 and 32 Prison runs. Increase the chance for a drop for the Nightfall and the Crucible (hell, add in a chance for a drop in the Crucible) as well as the Iron Banner once it starts up again. An increase of 10, 15, or even 20 percent along with the additional places to get it would make the grind much less agonizing overall, and would have the added effect of making people want to play more than they do now.
Making the Etheric Light the carrot at the end of the stick is one thing. But you've got to use a shorter stick. nobody will want the carrot if they can't even see it at the end of the stick.
As it stands right now, there's nothing in sight to chase after, and it just kills the desire to play.
Edit 1 (of what will probably be the first of several edits...): I fully know where to currently get Etheric Light, that's not the issue. the issue is the time it takes to get even one piece. Most people only have 2-3 hours to play per night. Therefore, most people find it very difficult to "do everything in all characters per week" like you kids on summer break are getting more than twelve hours to accomplish.
Edit 2: PvP isn't everyone's strong-suit, nor is so easy as "git gud skrub". Those of you who say "it's a cakewalk to go 9-0 in the trials and get 3 EL per character per week" should probably quit talking. You're only making yourselves look ignorant, not like the PvP-gods you think you are.
Edit 3: ironBill posted this, and he clarifies the intent of this post nicely.
FWIW, I couldn't care less about getting through ToO. Really, I'm finding I don't care about hitting 34 on all characters either. No point to it. Just so we know who we both are.
The OP is talking about play balance, and whether or not Bungie is hitting their market, which I happen to find is a great point. Who IS the demographic? Are they trying for a very select subset of skills to reward this time around? Sure seems that way. Good PvP players are strutting around like they invented fire... happy for 'em too I guess, but if that's all this DLC is intended to give us, my question follows - is that all there is to this?
Edit 4: Calling me a "scrub" doesn't do anything as I really don't care. All you're doing by slinging names like that is highlighting the lack of strength in your argument.
Edit 5: pablogordon had another great idea. I've quoted it here to give it some love.
There should have been an exchange rate at the speaker for Etheric light. Baffling really that it's not there.
Make it really expensive. The most expensive thing in the game currently is that ship from Petra at what, 17.5k glimmer? Make the Etheric light cost that plus one each of the radiants, and ten each of the ascendants, and some coins and motes for good measure. The speaker exchange was a very good step in the right direction to sinking some currencies, especially Friday when Xur sold the helm engrams and now that most everyone has a couple few weapons they want to re-roll.
Why not just add the Etheric light? If we are really honest, the point isn't just hitting max anymore (and thankfully so) but putting together a setup with both the perks and looks that suit your play style!
Edit 6: And, here's a link for why the PoE loot system is broken in general, but parallels well with the rarity of Ethereal Light.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2015/05/28/destinys-prison-of-elders-has-a-serious-loot-problem/?utm_campaign=yahootix&partner=yahootix
Edit 7: FatChubbE offers a very good breakdown of what the responsible adult Gamer deals with in trying to overcome the base design of this DLC. It is an accurate description, and props go to him for it.
The adults I play this game with aren't always on. Three are full time Grad students with jobs, two are parents with wives and kids. My son plays between school and football practice and games when he's not doing chores or homework. The full time gamers in my clan have all partnered up, so getting help from them is difficult. The "it's easy" comments applies only to those with spare time. We did one nightfall and one 32 prison of elders. That's all we had time for. Don't get me wrong, the etheric light is there. It's obtainable. But it's not obtainable "easy". Easy when applied to time spent obtaining does not bode well for the working/school demographic. It applies only to destiny players who play destiny for hours on end every day. To put it into perspective we did (two) ToO matches. that's right 2. We were not in control of the time. With loading, and 5 round matches, two matches took an hour. If you do 8 and win flawlessly without the other team winning a single point, 3 hours at least grinding for an etheric light. If you add a 34 or 35 prison of elders and you're a super stud team that's another 2 hours with loading, game time, running back to the airlock. And 2 hours is giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're really really good. If you're average, add at least another hour or two. So the argument that it's "easy" is a matter of perspective. Easy as far as skill level? Or easy as a matter of "I got all the time I need to play?" Either way, getting etheric light takes more time than any other currency we've been offered thus far. That's just how it is. People took days off to play this. Which kind of gives you an idea of the commitment to time you have to invest to receive these "easy" rewards.
Edit 8: IIFormer GamerII also has a great take on the time sink necessary and the base design of these DLC.
You are without a doubt correct when it comes to grinding through the same content three times over in Destiny, and the annoyances, redundancy, sheer boredom, and time consumption that comes along with it. After playing through the base game and TDB I've come to realize that destiny simply isn't a game that can be played causally, and if you attempt to do so you should be prepared to put yourself at an extreme disadvantage. This was my main reason for intentionally skipping out on HoW, because I knew that the never ending grind would continue.
If you have a lot of spare time on your hands, Destiny is a great game to play with clan mates. But truth be told you cannot simply play destiny in a casual manner such as battlefield or call of duty, without hindering your progression dramatically and being seen as a "slacker," "leech," or a "freeloader."
Destiny's new loot looks nice, but I just can't take the grind anymore.
Edit 9: To all the people telling us that not everyone should be able to get to end-game content, or that parts of the game should be locked except for the "hardcore" crowd: So having entire portions of the game locked out to a player simply for no other reason than Bungie feeling the need to promote elitist alienation of their player base... is ok?
The only thing more wrong than Bungie's "philosophy" are the people who jump at any chance to support it.

On the Forbes article, if a Treasure Key dropped every round why even require the keys in the first place? He's essentially asking for another chest. I don't get it. PoE 28 is strike level difficulty, it drops strike level rewards. Makes sense. As for the rarity of eth light, it'll only take you an hour or two get clear through Trials with a decent team. Clearly you're one of the PvE-only bitches, but you can easily clear PoE 34 within your timeframe. Even Skolas would be doable with a prepared strat for the boss. Moreover, those are all guaranteed, so you know that your "precious" time won't be wasted. I don't get the problem you're having.
-
2-3 hours per night means 7 etheric per week, 17 weeks until next DLC, so 119 etheric light before DLC, which is enough to upgrade all the things. Assuming you're a long standing player and were at 32 when House of wolves dropped. I expected it to be rarer, got 11 on week one, and before we go there, I have a full time salary position, that I am also on call 24/7 outside office hours.
-
why there are lots of post where there are people who say that the etheric light is rare? I got 15 etheric light right now...
-
Edited by Helix33: 5/28/2015 9:46:21 PMim not a big fan of PVP and Trials of osiris and i suck at it, and the fact that a 34 poe only can give you 1 light sucks a bit. im basically already hitting a brick wall in week 2 of the HOW release, queens bounties are weekly, Variks is sooo boring to grind on lvl 28 and takes long! so you do the 32 and maybe the 34 (But Qordon this week is ridiculous..) and since im not 34 yet, im not even thinking on taking down skolas yet.
-
Having three 34's in the first week isn't the standard for gaming progression for those who actually have balance in our lives and don't let this blatantly addictive game waste our hours away. The amount of arrogance and lack of objective arguments in this thread is pathetic, my God.
-
*nods head in agreement* Very well put together post.
-
Wait till iron banner next week and u can get up to 6 etheric light if u rank up all 3 characters to ib5
-
This game has both PvE and PvP, if your only gonna play one of them then yes the etheric light will be "harder" to get. People just want more rewards for PvE because it's easier than PvP. If you're bad at multiplayer get over it, don't blame the decent players for enjoying it.
-
I got at least 15 of them last week and received 0 from RNG. Definitely not rare
-
So I tried to get a 34 PoE group last night. Sent out messages as a 33 warlock for about 20 minutes. Never got a single reply. Guess I'm stuck for a bit.
-
Well said. I'm already getting bored with it. What irritates me the most is the PvP focus. I think we can all agree that us PvE only players are still grinding for Etheric Lights and after the latest weekly update, I'm a little pissed off. First (keyword) run throughs for Etheric Lights: Lvl 34 - 2 hours = 1 light Lvl 35 - 4 hours = 1 light Trials - 45 minutes for 9 wins = 3 lights And now we're told that you'll be able to BUY them in the upcoming Iron Banner!!?!? What kind of shit is that?!?
-
-blam!- farming for keys lol
-
I actually disagree with this post. Etheric light is available enough to be earned fairly for level development.
-
I skipped The Dark Below because I knew HoW would offer better content per dollar and that their first DLC would swiss cheese base game mats with some ridiculous farm 10 bajillion of these one or two mats to hit max idea basically I knew it was going to be garbage but I knew the successor would be vastly improved the only real complaint I have this time is that there is still no matchmaking and that they've added a 3rd hard to get mat to hit max level and building upon my matchmaking complaint there is now extreme elitism on LFG sites now so I can't even enjoy all of one of the only DLC packs I've ever purchased its coming to a boiling point where I think I and many gamers are seeing DLC as nothing more than cash grabs and if this is the future of gaming I don't want to be a part of it, parting out games to squeeze more money out of people is killing what used to be the core market eventually it will become so full of greed and elitism that common people won't be able to afford it and only the rich will be able to play. At its core Pay to play isn't wrong but this mobile-esque system they are trying to do on consoles won't work for much longer if you have to pay multiple times to just even feel like you got your money out of the game. Long story short, if bungie would just make a few more changes through some sort of Customer QA beta testing program get feedback from the players participating offer them some cool emblem and shader for their time and feedback they could turn the tide heavily in their favor, sure sales wise destiny is doing fairly well but eventually people are going to get tired of the hassle and elitism of LFG and other parts of the game and more than likely will return their favorite franchises (Halo/CoD/Elder Scrolls/ Potentially Fallout 4 if Bethesda announce its hopefully this E3 I really hope doom 4 wasn't the "big" reveal/[everything else])
-
Nope ... Making so the gjallahorn is the only viable option on end game content is bullshit. 3 hours over been trying with my fire team who don't have it and its do or quit ... Honestly .. I just want to quit ... But if I do I'll quit for good.
-
Lol looks like Bungie did it. They finally killed destiny!
-
I totally agree with you, i have a family and am pretty successful at what I do. After helping the kids with homework and helping my wife with chores around the house I normally have a good 2 hours of play time a night every other night, I feel that now the game has put a lot of the content out of reach for players like me. I see my self playing less and less now. Thx bungie

Edited by Crooked Paradox: 5/30/2015 2:40:19 AMI have a slightly different outlook on the whole Etheric Light situation. Before I begin, I'd like to point out that I'm married with 2 boys that 9 & 11 yrs old. I'm retired and spend a good portion of my time playing the game as well. That being said, I don't see myself as MLG material and I just enjoy playing the game with my wife and sons. First thing I'd like to say is that I think that the heavy players ruin the game for some people by completing everything in such a short period of time and then parading around like it was easy. There's no reason why anyone should have been a lvl 34 with in the first couple of days, or even weeks. Secondly, I think many people are so eager to get all of the new toys and end up frustrating themselves because they didn't see the path laid out for them. There are 2 distinct paths outside of Iron Banner, which remains to be seen, and I believe this post shows that they're being missed. These two paths are obviously Trials of Osiris and Prison of Elders. The problem is that everyone is jumping the gun and trying to finish the top end of PoE early or expecting to get too much from ToO. The Prison of Elders path is relatively simple and is designed for people to use lvl 28 as an introduction/casual play area to get accustomed to the gameplay. The lvl 32 option is meant to be played for the next 3-4 weeks, amassing the appropriate light level gear to become lvl 34 so that you can then play the lvl 34 version. Then the lvl 34 version is meant to help us collect weapons that will help us with collections and give us Etheric Light so we can ascend our preferred weapons in preparation for lvl 35. Now forgive me as I haven't gotten a full grip on Trials of Osiris yet but I'd imagine that it's setup similarly so we shouldn't be able to max out immediately. My point is that I think most people are either completing the expansion too quickly or feel inadequate because they aren't keeping up with the obsessive and aggressive players that lead the pack. I realize $20 doesn't seem like a lot to people these days but this was designed for your average player to get mileage out of it. Try to see my point of view and realize that this is all we have until September's mystery release of "Comet" or whatever Bungie is cooking up. So basically, just take your time and know that the toys will come in time. I know I want to ascend my Fatebringer like so many have already. Oh and Etheric Light does drop in the nightfalls. My son got it in 2 of his 3 NF's this week. Jealous? Yes I am.
-
In twelve days time it won't matter. ESO is coming.
-
Agreed. I'm a Dad playing this game with his son, and have found HoW to be a poor purchase. PoE takes too long, with really lackluster incentives to play, especially considering there are no checkpoints to let us continue another time. I'm in a clan with other dads, and in 2 weeks and I've heard of only 1 member getting 1 Etheric light. In general we don't play PvP, so ToO holds no interest, and the little crucible sized rooms of PoE offer little enjoyment. If I could get a refund, I'd be happy to leave all my chars at 32 for now and forgo the pink weapons.
-
It's actually Legendary, guess what... Legendarys are suppose to be hard to get
-
Lol i hit 34 on day two.
-
Edited by mike235883: 5/30/2015 2:07:02 AMIdk how to fix it. No matter what people will cry and wine
-
Hard to put decent constructive critisism out there with out the little ones saying get good 9/10 of them are horrible at the game. People just think that it will make them cool if they troll but they're doing it wrong. You actually have to be creative and come up with your own stuff instead of acting like sheeple
-
I like how some people ignorantly think everyone's situation is the same as theirs.
-
Agreed! I think you should have a chance at one in the little chests in PoE. Lvl 34 and 35 have etheric drops (the only reason I do PoE) but the other two are a waste of time. Unless you've grinded for hours in the end for keys, you get barely anything as a reward. So much time and effort for so little. Even if you have a key it's for a chance at something. Hell, you have a better chance at getting something just playing strikes, ToO or Crucible for a hell of a lot less effort. PoE was fun at first but once I have my last 34 I will not be playing it again. It will be back to the raids, crucible and strikes for me. Hell, I would rather deal with the lag-switch cheaters in ToO rather than spend hours in PoE for a couple of coins and motes of light!
