First of all, I think it's great that the whole digital-upgrade concept is offered for Destiny players - it broke my heart to start up my Xbox One for the first time to find that much and many of the games and content I had purchased previously were now unavailable without a second purchase.
That being said, I just purchased the HoW DLC content on my Xbox One out of the complete happenstance of having been on my One at the time. Upon turning on my 360 to continue playing, I found that I would necessarily have to purchase the DLC content AGAIN on my 360 due to the one-way-street nature of the digital-upgrade offer.
Now, this deserves a little more explanation as to why this is so frustrating for me. The only reason that I made the decision to burn through my pathetically limited funds (as a college student, in my defense) to purchase an Xbox One was because my 360 was seemingly no longer producing a picture, on any TV, with any cable. Almost immediately after turning the thing on, two things then prompted me to turn around and spend countless hours fixing my 360. The first of these was that after buying my One and realizing that backwards compatibility with 360 games was a foolish fantasy of mine, I wanted to go back and be able to play old games and game saves. The second, and far more motivating of the two, was that my roommate's 360 broke about 6 months ago and, although we have 2 TVs to play on, we were stuck switching off on the Xbox One to the point that sharing no longer became sharing.
With that unnecessarily large amount of background information being said, I am really hoping there is some way I might be able to transfer this content back to my 360 to allow both my roommate and I to over-indulge ourselves in near-fatal doses of this awesome new DLC content without tediously sitting on the couch contemplating mutinous thoughts.
Is there any possibility that a backwards version of the Digital-Upgrade offer exists for people in my position? If not, is there any way I could just return my Xbox One DLC to purchase the 360 in its stead, or exchange the two? I'm even willing to spend the extra money on a season pass, as my roommate and I would both split the cost - I just don't want to feel like I must necessarily do everything in duplicate just to allow him and I to both have a good time. Any help is much appreciated.

As you mentioned, the next gen systems do not have backward compatibility with their last gen systems. Like all your other games, licenses on one system do not work for another system. The digital upgrade offer exists as a means for players who have not yet upgraded to a next gen system, to be able to bring content to their new system when they do upgrade. It is a special offer, with limitations like many special offers in any industry, and it does not work in the opposite direction. You can contact your retailer to ask for a refund (Microsoft), but it is generally not a policy to grant such a refund.
