The New Breed of AFK, and What Bungie Can Do About It

A random was in my fireteam Monday 5/25 for the weekly heroic strike on Aksor, Archon Priest. He didn't follow me and the other member of the team into the strike area. At first, I thought he was just afk. The other player (another random) and I waited for a minute or two, he didn't move, we went ahead and started the strike without him. Later, I could see his name moving around. But he still wasn't up in the strike area. I was puzzled, but too busy to think about it. Then we (the two of us actually doing the strike) died. I saw that the third, apparently afk, guy had almost as many kills as we did. That's when I realized: He was key farming out in the patrol area, while we did the weekly heroic strike for him. If we hadn't died, I would never have figured it out. He would have had his coins, plus whatever he got from the Fallen target chests too. In a stroke of luck, somehow he got disconnected while we were fighting the Archon Priest himself. He sent me a friend request and a message asking me to get him back in so he could get his coins. Fat chance. Get your own damn coins. Bungie, this needs to be addressed. Going afk and letting other players do their work for you is bad enough. This was actively taking advantage of other players to not only have them do your work, but do it while you do another mission of your own. And I have a simple solution to the whole AFK problem in general. Here it is: ** If you don't do damage to a target in the final boss area of the strike, you don't get rewards. Period. You don't have to damage the boss himself- I understand how bad luck can leave a player as a floating cloud of particles before they even have a chance to shoot at the boss. But there is almost NO way that a player could not get ONE shot on ONE target in the boss arena. Not even a kill; just do some damage before dying. That is all it takes to qualify you for your reward, be it Strange Coins or the Nightfall rewards. A player would have to AT THE VERY LEAST aim and fire at a target, rather than just sit idle and be respawned there with his fireteam. Is my idea perfect? No. Is it still subject to abuse? Yes. Is my idea miles better than what we have now, which is nothing? I think it is. Please consider it. EDIT: originally this post called for a ban, naming the afk player's PSN ID. I was advised by someone on the thread that Bungie has banned threads that did this in the past for violating the code of conduct. So no ID named anymore. But you know who you are. EDIT 2: I made this a more general post and moved it to #Feedback, hoping Bungie might take my suggestion for how to fix the problem with AFK in strikes. It would be nice if it were to get some positive attention from them. EDITED EDIT TO THE LAST EDIT: A lot of players are in favor of the "vote to kick." That has some good points as well, and would be better than nothing. But it would be open to abuse by teams of 2 who vote to kick other players for no reason, or simply because their friend suddenly came online and wants to join them, etc. That's why I don't like leaving it up to the players. Am I cynical? Yes, but that's because, although I hope for people to be their best, I expect some to act their worst. (We wouldn't be having this discussion if we didn't have assholes in the game in the first place.) Any system can be abused given enough greed and ingenuity. But I think my suggestion is as close to "neutral" as any can be. It requires that all players 1) be in the final boss arena, and 2) participate at least to the bare minimum of picking up the controller, aiming, and shooting something; while 3) it protects against an unlucky break killing a player before the boss appears, in a position where his allies can't revive him. It even allows for the cherished tradition of carrying lower-level friends through an event- just pop one shot at the Dreg in that cave over there, then hide for the rest of the boss fight while your buds do the rest. There's no way to sit out the entire strike. It's not perfect, but I've put a lot of thought into it. I think it's pretty good.

  • Here's what I think, most want OMM and things like this does not help the fight of getting it. If you do not like AFK players then make your team up of friends or deal with it. I agree with you that it's BS but by you complaining about it, you are asking bungie to fix this problem. And a problem it is. What's gonna happen when they put OMM in all end game content? I'll tell you, the same thing you just dealt with. Then they will have to listen to everyone cry 10 times more than they already do about AFK players. Can't have a vote to kick option cuz two friends will be in there and just kick the third and get there buddy in there.

  • The only problem is with the prison. I have had random team member on level 32 fail to revive me before leaving the area, so my ghost was stuck in a glitched out state in the vex area when the boss fight was hive and I couldn't get to it and they couldn't get to me. I like the idea just don't have them implement it for poe

    • Honestly, I'm kind of disappointed that the weekly heroic uses matchmaking now. Nothing against other players or Bungie, I just prefer to solo stuff like that because people are more likely to hinder me rather than help me. Just my opinion though.

      • I had something similar happen on poe but a little different i join this guy and a random me and the random got all the way to stage for while the host purposely ran to a corner had his char sit and do nothing for 4 round then after me and the random died multiple times due to mines the guy finaly did something and when i say that he kicked me and the random and this was lvl 34 poe 2 hours in i put up something in the help but no one responded :( its bull and they should have a sever consequence for it to

      • All bungie need to do is add the teleport option like in POE so the instant you hit the next darkness zone in a strike then it drags in the rest of team, this would also help with speed runs when mate can't keep up.

          Here is how I handled this twice when it happened to me last week, waited, watched then left. Any random not doing the strike I leave. I spawn, get on sparrow, go to first corner, turn and wait any pissing about I'm gone, if they don't follow, I'm gone. If they make any half decent attempt even the low level players I've no problem.

              People like this are the reason I don't play any strike playlists anymore, thank god PoE teleports AFKers to the middle of the map where they get lit up like a bon fire. these people seriously killed my enjoyment of this game because it's IMPOSSIBLE for me to get into ANY strike, without at least 1 person sitting AFK. I dunno if I'm just unlucky with freaking matchmaking, but it's seriously annoying. Edit: I'd also like to note, this is merely my own opinion, but, I find "speedrunners" who leave you in the dust to deal with all the mobs on your own are about as bad as AFKers, in MY OPINION. Really tired of being left to deal with all 3 minotaurs, every single hobgoblin, harpy, and goblins in the pike run of the Priest, really grinds my gears.

                  Or have it if you don't get to the next check point within 7 minutes of your team mates you get kicked.

                      • This is where a vote kick could make/break this game. Could be useful in situations like this but could be hella abused. I still don't understand why your able to go other places in a strike in the first place! You're there for the strike so do the strike and quit wasting everyone else's time.

                          A three player fire-team should have a boot option by team vote. The fire-team leader issues the option and states the reason ex. Inactivity, so a 2-1 vote boots the AFK player. Same with a six player fire-team with a 5-1 vote.

                              • This is what i always do. If someone isn't moving or moving but not helping. Just die in a skull zone. It will kill everyone not in the zone and spawn you and the checkpoint.

                              • When I got to the part where he sends you a friend request I laughed out loud. Some people. This used to happen to me during the Devils Lair strike when farming the loot cave in the rust yards was a thing. Two dudes left me to run the entire strike by myself. There's a rumor that the RNG drops are better in strikes than patrol. I'm pretty sure that's only if you're in the re spawning restricted areas only.
