Actually, I've since rescinded my comments on the LMGs. Another poster opened my eyes on that one, but I'm not one to edit my comments. I stand by my words, mistaken or not.
Most belt-fed machine guns do, in fact, feed above the barrel. The mechanism removes rounds from the belt in a backward motion, where the tip drops into place, and then they're pushed into the chamber. The empty belt is fed out the opposite side, while the spent casings are ejected from the bottom.
I still stand by my opinion that the design of the Hand Cannons and Scout rifles make absolutely no sense.
