I think the hammer is only "igniting" some space glimmer or whatnot, which then magically transforms the Thorns inner creatures into a Thorn bullets upon exiting the barrel. So where the hammer sits in relation to the cylinder is probably not that important. [Edit] you should probably read that sentence with a Yoda voice.
