Eden: Chapter 1
The room was dark and ill lit. A single lamp illuminated the desk positioned in the corner of the room. In the gloom, books could be seen stacked in cabinets and piled in waist high stacks on the floor. The soft glow of the monitor outlined the figure sitting hunched over the desk. His blue robotic eyes darted back and forth taking in the rush of information that was being displayed on the screen. Suddenly a bright light shone behind him lighting up the entire corner of the room in a brilliant white. The Exo lurched forward and let out a synthetic gasp.
“You have been down here for almost six days. You really should get out of this room. Your power cells have to be running low.” The ghost said.
“Serpa. Your startled me. No need to worry about power. I installed a charging outlet so I don’t have to leave.”
“That’s not the point Nesk. You have been over all this data a hundred times and still can’t make sense of it. And isn’t it against Tower building code to alter anything including electrical systems?”
“Only if they find out.” He said with a mechanical grin and turned back to the monitor. “I swear its right there but there is something missing. Something is wrong with the theories on the Vex. I know that they have some other purpose. I just need to find a scrap of information.”
“Nesk you can only learn so much from sitting and reading scientific notes and field reports. You might just have to go out and get your hands on some actual information.”
“You mean go to Venus don’t you?”
“Yes Nesk, that is what I mean.”
“You know I don’t do well in the wilderness. Hell when you revived me we barely made it back to the tower in one piece. I don’t think I’m cut out for life in the wild.”
“You are a guardian and I chose you because I saw something in you. You are a warlock. One of the most feared and awe inspiring beings to have ever walked the earth. You are more than capable of handling anything out in the wilderness.”
“Serpa, I don’t even know if I am a Void Walker or a Sun Singer. I haven’t even been able to perform my first super yet and you want me to go trouncing off to Venus looking for information.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
The ghost looked at him with what could only be described as a glair and after a moment spoke.
“Fine. If you won’t leave on your own accord, I’m going to have to force you.” He said and started floating towards the closed door.
Nesk swiveled around in his chair and looked at the floating bot, a puzzled look resided on his face.
“What do you mean ‘I’m going to have to force you’?”
“I’m going to tell the barracks manager that you have tampered with the wiring system.”
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“The ghost turned and faced his companion.
“I brought you back for a reason and it wasn’t to sit here cooped up in a room scrolling through data and reading books for the rest of your existence. You have the ability, and therefore responsibility, to fight the darkness and protect those who can’t protect themselves. If you aren’t doing that then what was the point of me brining you back? What is the point of my existence at all if that is true?”
Nesk sat at the desk and stared at the ground. After a few moments he looked up and spoke to his friend.
“You are right. It is my responsibility and I have been neglecting it. Alright we will go to Venus. But first I need to find something to point us in the right direction.”
“Good. And I think I might have something that could help us. About a month ago two guardians were brought in by the tower security force. As far as I know, they are still in the brig.”
“That’s interesting, but what does it have to do with Venus?”
“The guardians were sent by Master Ikora on a mission to explore a new program of Vex on Mars.”
“Well that does sound interesting. How did you find out about this?”
“Just before the guardians landed, one of their ghosts sent out a data burst that revealed who they were, what their mission was, and that the ghosts that received the message were not to tell anyone they had received it.”
“This is getting more interesting by the second. Alright Serpa, let’s go pay these guardians a visit and see what they know.”
Velox sat in the interrogation room with a detective from tower security seated across the table from her. She wore plane white clothes and felt naked and vulnerable without her armor. She studied the detectives face. He looked tired. He was a human that wore the grey suit with the tower security emblem stitched on the left shoulder. A stun baton rested on his hip but otherwise he was unarmed.
“Velox, it’s been almost a month since we brought you in…”
“You mean we turned ourselves in at your request.”
The detective sighed.
“The point is you must be getting tired. I know Azrix is. Every day he gets more and more angry. There are missing sections of your report. We know that you made contact with a new type of Vex and that you ventured into a large cavern system. After that everything is just a blank. Until you repaired Azrix’s ship and returned to orbit. We know you found something on Mars and until you tell us, you will stay here.” He said setting down a paper copy of the mission report.
“For the last time detective, we went into the cavern, fought a few Vex and after that we found the source of the signal and shut it down. Afterwards, we returned to the base camp and repaired Azrix’s ship and returned to orbit. That is all that happened.” She said leaning forward, annoyance apparent in her tone.
The detective slouched in his chair and tilted his head back to look at the ceiling.
“Velox please. I have been asking you the same questions for weeks now. All I want to do is get a solid answer from you. We know from analyzing your ghosts memory that almost eight hours of recorded data was wiped from both your and Azrix’s ghosts. We need to know what occurred during those eight hours.”
“I’ve already told you detective. When we were inside the cavern the Vex had created there was some kind of time altering environment. It must have affected our ghost’s memory. And by the way they have names.” She shot back.
“Fine. We are done for today.” He said gathering up the papers and his data pad.
A guard dressed in light armor entered the room and unshackled her handcuffs from the table. He led her out of the room and down a long corridor. Once they passed through a security gate, they made a left down another long corridor. The walls, floor, and ceiling were a bright white. The intense light that came from the walls almost made it hard to see without squinting your eyes.
They came to a section of the wall that had the numbers “24” stenciled on the wall itself. The guard waved a small tab and the door popped open with a metallic click. Inside was a room four feet wide by eight feet long. A single bed was pushed to one side of the room with a toilet and sink at the other end. A small book shelf was mounted on the wall but contained nothing. She stepped inside and sat down on the foot of the bed.
