No, even in the modern world, or 5,000 years from now, you can survive perfectly fine without even being able to speak at all. It doesn't matter how safe you think an area is, crime can happen anywhere. I lived in a darn good neighborhood and was a victim of a home invasion. Protecting yourself is and always will be vital.
