I want to begin by saying this is not a rage post, I am not mad or upset. Merely just pointing out a problem in Crucible which I hope can be fixed. It is time for Bungie to change the perks on the exotic hand cannons Thorn and The Last Word.
I would like to consider myself a pretty decent player in the Crucible. I usually finish top two on my team, regardless of what playlist I am in. However, I constantly find myself being out-gunned by Thorn and The Last Word users more frequently than any other guns in the game. Why? It is simple, damage over time is extremely over powered and TLW has a rate of fire that makes it almost impossible to beat close range. What is my concern, you may ask? Simple, both of these weapons especially Thorn are far too over-powered. Many of the players at the top of the leader boards on DestinyTracker use these weapons. Why? Because they know these weapons are OP, the same way Vex used to be OP last Fall.
I personally believe these weapons take away from the competitive nature of PvP, especially Thorn. A gun that will literally get the kills for you, without accurate shooting, is not a gun for a skilled player. What bothers me more is that "top players" use Thorn and like to think they are the best, when in reality they are using a weapon that literally will EARN KILLS for you. On the other hand, at least the Last Word can be countered, by keeping your distance. Thorn is not so easy to counter. At least against a The Last Word user you can have game plan, but against Thorn you just have to hope that they miss you. They don't even need to land head shots to kill you. Sounds like a crutch to me.
My solutions:
Both are pretty simple, Bungie does not have to take DoT off of Thorn, maybe make it a by chance concept that it will register, let's say 2 bullets out of every mag. With TLW it can be just as simple, lower the rate of fire a bit so players can't just spam their trigger whenever they see an enemy. I am sure there are other solutions to changing these weapons, maybe you guys can come up with some. I am not asking Bungie to take away the perks that make these guns exotic, I understand they are supposed to be unique. But there is a major difference between guns being unique and just completely over-powered.
With Trials of Osiris coming up I really hope Bungie can change these gamebreaking weapons. If not, I will continue to just do me and use my weapons I like, regardless of what my enemy is using. However, if you use either of those two exotic hand cannons, I do not care what your numbers are, you aren't the best or that much better than me. You rely on weapons that are, and have been OP for the last few months. You need a crutch. If you use weapons other than those two and beat me in a one v. one I will have much more respect for you. If you use either of these guns as your main Crucible weapon, I don't think you deserve respect from anyone. This is a problem with Destiny allowing players to use whatever they want in Crucible, people will abuse the most OP guns in the game until they are changed. I remember when earning that Thorn bounty and completing it was like a trophy and the gun was not so over-powered. I used to love my Thorn, but then I noticed how much of a crutch it is and I would rather display skill than rely on DoT to earn my kills.
Anyone who feels like me, comment, bump, or like. I want to know how everyone feels. And go ahead, say I am mad or butthurt over these weapons, I could give two shits. I know that I am a better player because I don't use these weapons and try to keep a level playing field for everyone. I know that someone else has to see the flaws in these weapons being so OP and it is time for us to voice our opinions.
Gonna make some edits..
Edit #1: I own both Thorn and TLW so don't tell me I need to get either of them, you're missing the whole premise of what I am saying.
Edit #2: I am not, I repeat AM NOT asking for a complete nerf, just a change in the way the perks work.
Edit #3: Don't comment on here if all you want to bring is negativity, as mentioned above I could give two shits.
Edit #4: Done commenting back to most people on this thread. A lot of people posting are afraid of losing their crutch, which is understandable. If you have something productive/positive to say, I will probably respond. Any negative posts will be ignored though, too many freighted Thorn users, or others who think their jokes are funny.

When i see a thread where the word EARN is highlighted or even written in fat big letters i collect all the tears from the OP.
Tears +11
+1 tear collected. Thanks for the donation!

Theirs a reason their exotic like Bungie has said
-
Here is the biggest problem i have with your post: first it was the Vex was tooo OP then it was ARs are toooo OP then it was Shotguns and Fusion Rifles are tooooo OP now its Thorn and TLW are tooo OP If Bungie nerfs these two weapons it will be: Truth is toooooooo OP. Nerf the tracking or blast radius. Enough already. Must we emasculate every gun in crucible to the point we get back to the Vex being tooo OP? Learn and adjust to playing against these guns instead of whining and crying for a nerf. And I DONT PLAY PvP on Destiny.
-
No!! Leave both guns alone. All they need to do is create counters. For example a piece of armor that makes u immune to the poison of the thorn. Honestly the last word is fine.
-
I dont think either weapon is op, its just that every other favourite weapon has been nerfed following crucible complaints. So if these guns get "adjusted" then players will move onto the next set of guns that will be then considered op. The problem is not the weapons its the lack of proper balancing in crucible. Far better system would be to place some form of handicaps on the top players so that other crapier pvp players stand a chance of getting a kill. Dunno how to do it, maybe like cod - kill streak gives perks, and maybe a penalty to movement - that would make those fekers that keep killing me get some come uppance
-
Well, given Thorn's exotic perk couldn't be more useless in PvE, it might as well do something in PvP. It does, maxed out, 432 damage against a Tier 1 enemy the same level as me (32 Acolyte on Crota). The headshot alone does 866. The Hawkmoon does more than that combined, at an average bullet damage of 1786 against Tier 1 enemies the same level as you. It's underpowered in PvE, so it has to make up for it somehow.

Well- props to you for at least being civil in trying to give a few possible solutions to the Thorn/Word debacle. Unfortunately I don't see Bungie doing anything soon as the cycle of weapon buffs/nerfs is getting out of control. I'll just wait to see how some of the new legendaries or exotics perform in crucible- hopefully they will provide a bit more of the 'balance' you seek. Rock on guardian!

OP is just sad he can't use SUROS anymore.

Edited by PapaSohan: 5/14/2015 5:15:47 PMI think you are also forgetting that they have already nerfed both of these guns. In fact, Thorn was nerfed twice and also buffed once. These guns have the quickest TTK but they are also terrible for facing multiple enemies due to the long reload. Miss too many shots and you are a sitting duck. By the way, it's not all that difficult to outgun players using these weapons. You have to duck and dodge between cover and make them miss... then take your time killing them while they reload - try getting better at the game instead of asking for nerfs.
-
Nerf them then I'll move to hawkmoon. Nerf that... I'll move to red death. It will never end. People will always overuse a few weapons.
-
*Translation* "Im not as good as people in the top of the leaderboard, MUST BE THE GUNS THEY USE. couldnt be the fact that my overall skill is lacking"
-
Instead of nerfing these weapons people should learn how to make adjustments and play around them. TLW is impossible to take on close range? Don't get close. Thorns DoT killing you over and over? Use cover and get out of the fire fight before it makes a difference. You're using the most op weapon of them all by asking to nerf the weapons.

The obligatory, git gud scrub
-
TL;DR Or should I say TL;DC ( too long; don't care)
-
If you really wanted Bungie to read this you should have posted it in #Feedback. Nobody from Bungie ever browses General Discussion.
-
I'd say if anything, the range needs needs nerfed for both weapons...getting killed my a last word from across the map is the most outrageous BS
-
Don't need anything nerfed ever. Just bring other guns up to par. Besides, everyone has access to all the weapons. Go get one
-
Edited by PapaSohan: 5/14/2015 5:32:41 PMHey dude, I totally agree with you. These guns kill too quickly. I also think they should nerf snipers. Snipers are one shot head shot kills and that means I can't run out in the middle of the map without fear of getting one shotted. Bungie, please nerf. #sarcasm for the dull-minded.
-
I'm sure putting (read) in the title will definitely motivate them to read it
-
They need to change how the DoT works on thorn, either reduce the time or damage or reduce the damaged based by range. plus the effect should cancel the moment the thorn user is killed. slow down tlw's fire rate or slow its reload rate and reduce the clip size by 2. remove its hip fire stability perk so it cannot be spammed so easily.
-
Use the handcannons. If you don't perform better with them then it's not the guns it's the players that are better.

Bungie: * reads title* "lol no"

They're not "overpowered" in the traditional sense. It's just that the most common way to counter them has been nerfed to shit (Auto Rifles and Special Weapons). Before 1.1.1, it didn't feel like Thorn or TLW were "too powerful" because there was always a Rock/Paper/Scissors effect going on. Catching someone using them at close-range wasn't as bad, because you could easily slide in and decimate them with a shotgun blast, or chew them apart with an Auto Rifle if you had a steady aim... peppering them with bullets and f***ing up their shots. If there was a troublesome Last Word or the common tactic of "most of the enemy team has Thorn equipped", you could stock up on Special Ammo and hang back with a sniper rifle as well... not giving them the opportunity to engage you at their ideal range. There were legitimate counters to the exotic HCs. Those counters have been lessened (Special Ammo rarity), or removed outright (you have to be stupid as f*** or a masochist to run an Auto Rifle in Crucible now)... so Exotic HCs go unchecked, and it becomes a "if you can't beat'em, join'em" mentality that is easy to adopt since Xur recently sold The Last Word. Like, if you seriously didn't buy this when he's sold it, twice now, it's your own f***ing fault. Your other options are to operate with the other "counter-weapons" (i.e. "Other OP Weapons") like Red Death, Vex Mythoclast, etc. if you're fortunate enough to have one. The answer isn't to f*** with the Thorn/TLW. It's to bring Auto Rifles back to being a viable weapon class and figuring out a better balance for Special Ammo boxes. If Autos were the "close-range chainsaws" (Bungie's words, not mine) they were meant to be, that alone would lower the amount of people rushing in unimpeded and chewing apart half of your squad with a fan-fired revolver.
