If it gives the animal a survival advantage, it'd beneficial. If is doesn't, its not. If its neither, it can still get passed on by shear chance.

Britton quick question. could you think of morals as a more advanced version of instinct given that most animals only kill out of survival necessity?

Basically. What's "right" and "wrong" is something animals have to have a basic concept of. If something attacks a mothers young, that's bad, so the mother acts accordingly. Our higher cognitive ability means that right and wrong for us is simply a matter of our increased intellectual perception.
