The forerunners were the first beings of technology. There were no "precursors". I could easily tell you a story of whether the chicken came before the egg, and keep switching up the beginning of that story. That is what 343 is doing. Everything doesn't need to be explained, even the vague parts. We were never meant to know everything. Just because these f*cker gamers want answers doesn't mean they should get them. It's more realistic to keep things unknown than to keep adding content to a story too vast to fully comprehend.
