Here's why you're (still) wrong about matchmaking, Bungie.

Edit: [i]So this was posted pre-HoW. I've since played PoE and still believe optional matchmaking should be available for the higher difficulties. I was originally matched random with 2 people who weren't talking. We beat the level 28 and they sent me an invite. They'd been in a private party chat and so we ran the 32 and beat it. Then they had to log off. If we'd been matchmade for the level 32, there'd have been absolutely no difference. Some may argue that the system worked because we beat the 28 and moved on together, but there's a problem with that. While it was great to run another, if people have to leave or can't run more and no one is on your friends list to run, then you're stuck with no way to progress without having to find randoms on LFG sites or spamming players. Also, if you're attempting a run and one person has to leave, you could also be screwed. There's no reason in that situation to not be able to queue for a third person. There is no more chance of success on lfg sites vs in game matchmaking. When it was out, friends would come over to play, people would have lan parties and there was always someone to play with. The thing is, [b]almost 15 years later[/b], we're not all care free youth anymore. We have families, jobs, responsibilities and our friends have theirs. The ones who may still get online often have drastically different schedules and so a lot of us play more alone these days. That's a large reason why when the 360 released, it was such a hit. Suddenly as we were getting older and not hanging out with friends as much, there was a way to easily get online and find people to play with and we developed online friendships and relationships. I actually met my wife playing Perfect Dark and I've read threads of others who met their spouses on Live. Pretty much my friends list all came from Perfect Dark, Gears and Halo 3 [b]because they all had really good matchmaking that encouraged communication and being social[/b]. Sure there were annoying bastards here and there, but overall it was a great experience. After Halo 3, I got to where with work, etc I didn't really have time to play much anymore. I even went without gold for a few years at one point. Then you teased Destiny. When it released I had a year subscription card to gold, I went and bought a new headset (hadn't used one in probably 4 years). Only thing was, the few friends who still played were all on XBone. No problem though. A few days of Destiny and everyone will have a ton of new friends, right? Here's a post I made of that day in another thread: [quote]Day one. By not including matchmaking because you think only pre-made fireteams capable of clearing content, you're stating that you think most of your community are useless assholes. It's actually sad the contempt you come across with to the average gamer these days. Destiny should be a social game, everything in it should build online relationships and encourage people to learn to work together. Instead it's a sterile, utilitarian and unbelievably antisocial world. I know you increased chat functionality in one of the patches, the problem is that 1) it's an opt in/out function and 2) you already conditioned people to playing without chat. I actually got into a match with a communicating team one day that invited me to a fireteam, from there I sent a couple friend requests and have since run my first raids and experienced that content [i]because another part of your game has matchmaking[/i]. That's why it makes it so mind boggling that, if we're willing to take the chance of playing with randoms, that option isn't available to us. We don't need your kid gloves. We don't need to be protected from ourselves. If you feel so strongly that we might run across nasty, stupid or just bad people, why not build in a system to quickly mute and easily vote out of games? Halo 3 had that. How can you not have refined and improved that all these years later? It's time to make Destiny a living breathing world and like any other, there will be good and there will be bad, there will be successes and failures and we'll learn to work together or we'll learn to accept defeat. Through it all, we'll inevitably be better for what we bring to others and they bring to us. If you give us that chance.

      For all you MM haters... what are you afraid of? What is so threatening to you about MM that you cry and scream at the thought of an [b]Optional[/b] MM setting you don't even have to use? Or is it you just want to feel "elite" for being one of the 20% of ppl who complete raids? I've done raids with randoms and with friends and it has worked out fine in both situations but why limit the player base to just 20% of players? Doesn't make sense. Options are always better than no options. More players playing Destiny is better for everyone. Being a programmer I know that adding optional MM is a very easy thing to do. To this day I have no idea why they didn't add it. Look at current stats on Playstation. Only 20% of Destiny players have completed a raid. So basically only 2 out of every 10 players. That's pitiful considering how important end game content is to Destiny and points to a total failure of that part of the game to Bungie. Think about it, in school if you get 20% on a test, what's the grade? They know those numbers, how could they not try to correct it? Instead they drop raids and go for this new Arena zombie mode type thing and still even require external group making for the useful modes to get the end game rewards. What could they be thinking? Hmm... we see that 80% of players either don't like to use 3rd party sites or just don't give a crap about playing a raid... Let's add a new zombie style mode but still leave out MM again? An experiment to see if they can get more participation for a dumber end game mode? It only needs 3, so clearly it's not as difficult as requiring 6 players. I guess we'll see. A bit tired of being Bungie's guinea pig, why not put in what works on so many other games and even their own from 15 years ago!?! Are there that few employees left from the old days you have forgotten your own "wheels" you created in the first place?

      Bump. Very well said. I think a lot of ppl have the wrong idea including Bungie. Yes the first couple of times you run end game you need to communicate, but overall the content isn't difficult enough that you require a premade team. It's just not and if you think it is sorry but your a bad gamer. Just like PoE yeah the first week or two ppl will talk after you learn the mechanics talking will be done. We don't have matchmaking because Bungie believes their own hype. This game is fun yes, but a challenge for seasoned gamers not even close.

I will not buy any more content if this doesn't change.. Why would I continue to pay for 4 levels of prison of elders when I can only play 1...get off your high horse bungie and make all elements matchmaking before your just left with groups of teenagers playing the game in there downtime..... I brought db and how on a package and feel somewhat robbed. Clock is ticking..

        • Bump. I'm tired of this lazy, cop-out bullshit of "you need a premade team". Matchmaking wouldn't remove premade teams. It would just allow people like me the opportunity to play end-game content. I work 50 hours a week. I have four animals and a house to care for. Only one of my friends has a 360, and he's got a crap connection. I don't have time to make friends online. I shouldn't have to choose between finding random people on a 3rd party website or being locked out of end-game content.

            • It took me two months AFTER the dark below release to finally beat the vault of glass on NORMAL because there was no matchmaking. Now I don't have any jobs yet, actually looking for a job to do this summer that has to do with culinary arts, but school is an overwhelming force that negates everything I want to do, so it is really hard to do things with my friends when we are all so busy with homework and group projects

                • Agreed. How about some simple Sync Plate zones in Tower plaza to gather the different raid hopefulls? Devs: Sometimes when you have a new crew you throw out a lot of old tried-and-true methods for new plans for a new experience. Consider the English phrase, "too clever by half". You don't need to re-invent the wheel to pad your developer resume while hobbling your playing public. This is not the triple AAA game we thought we were getting. (I'm looking at you Grimoire-approving 'xec). If you read the dev blogs from a year before launch you can feel the pride dripping and ego-strutting in every assurance about how expert the Bungie crew is and we'll all be so very happy with their fine work. I do believe the fear of failure has sunk in since launch and they are diligently trying to adapt.
