What makes you believe they were "given" similar traits as us?[/quote] Lemme rephrase a little. I believe that God created everything with an ability to adapt to their surroundings and environments. That birds in one place over time will develop (by selection and other means) beaks appropriate for the food available as an example. Birds with longer and sharper beaks to grab smaller insects would survive more in one area while another with shorter stronger beaks for cracking nuts would survive in another. I believe this is by design.

But it was possible before and severely limited after the flood because of what mankind did with genetics. That part is mostly inferred by the bible but I believe those things were done at Gods discretion.
