I was miffed back in the day as a loyal Bungie Mac fan. But I got over it, I played the German version of Halo: CE on my Mac (I was stationed in Germany and it was an impulse buy). While I pretty much had to download the English version of the script to know what was going on, it was still a lot of fun. I actually finished the game during my first deployment to Iraq. I never got the play the rest of them until last year (my girlfriend has a 360, all the Halos and we have split screen parties now and again). Playing them so much later really made the games look dated, but they were still fun. I was never into multiplayer, so I didn't really get much out of the games beyond the solo campaigns. At least with the first game, I kept feeling like it was a weird mix of Marathon and Oni (the TCTF police guys looked a lot like Spartans). I recognized several of the enemies as re-envisioned Marathon aliens (even the flood to an extent). But after playing through Halo 2 & 3, I saw the IP take on a life of its own. I wouldn't say I disliked any of them, though I wasn't overly impressed with 343i's direction. It's very noticeable how things changed if you were seeing it all for the first time and then saw the shift in Halo 4. I'm glad I finally got to play them, but they really can't compete with the nostalgia of Marathon. That is of course because of my age and gaming history. For others, Halo was their first real experience with Bungie and it left a lasting impression, the same way Marathon did for me. TL;DR: My nostalgia refuses to admit that Halo is better than Marathon, but I wasn't disappointed by it.

 • Halo 3 to 4 has s huge difference. You didn't get a chance to play halo reach? All the halo games are different, each add something new but reach and 4 added the most. Reach to 4 isn't as drastic as 3 to 4. Halo reach was a bungie game. It had lots of new stuff 3 didn't. Was still fun though even with some flaws.

 • Sort of the same situation with me. Halo CE felt like a combination of marathon and ONI. I still wish that they would port Halo 2+ to the Macintosh but companies will do what they do

 • I have heard good things about Marathon, but never played it. And like you, I grew up with Halo as you did with Marathon, so there's part of my love factor.
