In Destiny's story (or poor excuse for one anyway), we meet an enigmatic character with many secrets who seems to be helping us. That character is the Stranger. Not much is known about the mysterious Exo because she "doesn't even have time to explain why she doesn't have time to explain" (pitiful excuse by the way). From the few bits of dialogue, her appearance, and a Grimoire Card, I have pieced together a possible theory as to who she may be, and what her goals are. Now everyone has seen the Reddit post claiming that Destiny's story was not the original, and it included a character known as The Crow (most people believe this is the Queen's Brother). The Crow was to kidnap your Guardian and take you to his group of ex-Guardians who revealed that the Traveler caused the Collapse. Whether this post contains any true information remains to be seen. But if this is true, then this theory could be very plausible. In Destiny's campaign, we encounter the Stranger on multiple occasions (the beginning of the game, the Moon, Venus, and the end of the game). In the biggest scene with the Stranger, she talks to your Guardian about the dangers of the Vex and the Black Garden. At the same time, she is communicating with an anonymous person, presumably her ally. After she tells you to find the Black Garden, she says this interesting bit of dialogue: The Exo Stranger: A side must always be taken, little light (referring to your Ghost). Even if it is the wrong one (when she looks at you). Too late, returning. How many? (Indistinct chatter) Hold position, kill the engines, and don't let them find you. (She then disappears in tendrils of light) Who was the Stranger talking to? How many of what? Vex? Are we on the wrong side? Why can she teleport and you can't? *Guardian throws a fit* Another interesting thing about the Stranger is her appearance. On her armor, there is a symbol that looks like two purple semi-circles. On her cloak, there are Roman numerals: XIV (14). And, of course, there is her rifle. The description reads: "Ghost's analysis suggests this weapon has been exposed to incredible forces...and that parts of it shouldn't yet exist." Most peculiar. And, finally, there is her Grimoire Card: The Exo Stranger: Stories of an Exo who walks in the Darkness without a Ghost have long haunted the Tower. Legends say this anomaly dissolves in and out of the world, intangible and elusive, as if she is a visitor from somewhere beyond. Some believe she's the last of an ancient Exo squadron, fighting a long-forgotten war. Others dismiss her as a hallucination caused by exposure to Vex technology. But there are those who maintain that her intervention saved their lives - or averted unspeakable catastrophes. The Exo Stranger: Ghost Fragment: I stand here now and now and now many times, this view, this ground... This is where I always choose to stand. I put my feet where I put my feet before and where I will again and I look at the sky. Great things moving, rendered small with distance, lesser things not moving, watching me. I always stand here, resolute. Then fall back to that point, there, where everything shatters... (The sky isn't special here, certainly no better than any other sky, but it's the view I know best.) The silent avalanche begins. Rock and dust. Falling chaos. Machines, as a rule, hate chaos. Our enemies outflank us from below, above, left, right, before, beyond. The Traveler - shattering. There are always the dead. Their names shift. Sometimes I think I see myself among the dead. But I am resolute. There is a lot of cryptic information inside these lines. Now here is my official theory: The Exo Stranger was a member of the Future War Cult. Not officially though. Officially, she was one of the original members of the Binary Star Cult (a faction that existed during the Golden Age that believed the Traveler was the cause of the Collapse), which eventually evolved into the Trinary Star Cult. Now it has evolved into the Future War Cult. When you look at the names of the Cult, you can see how similar they are: 3 words, almost the same amount of letters, "war" and "star", and they are all cults. In the Future War Cult, there is a belief that there will be an eternal war. In their possession, they have an odd machine called The Device. From Grimoire Cards, there have been an account of some test subjects who entered the device. You can check out those Cards yourself as I am only going to paraphrase what happened. There were over 47 subjects that entered The Device, and eleven of those subjects reported "timelines" in which the Darkness has won while another thirteen report timelines in which the City had fallen. 23 subjects "babbled madness". For one subject, she gives her report: "At 11:32 she reported a sensation of someone taking her hand; a stranger, but also herself. Twelve subjects have reported similar experiences." First of all, she said it was a stranger, but also herself. This could be referring the Exo Stranger we all know. Another interesting tidbit is that twelve other people have had this experience. Considering the fact that 13 people have reported the City fallen, it is very possible that the subject is the thirteenth. To move along with this theory, we must discuss the Vex. The Exo Stranger seems to be very familiar with the Vex. After all, she knows about the Black Garden and of its Heart where the Vex are supposedly born. She even tells you to destroy it because it will heal the Traveler! But wait! Why would the Stranger, a member of a cult that despises the Traveler, want to save the Traveler? The answer's simple. Manipulation. But why? To answer the in-depth question, you must look at the Vex Ghost Fragments in the Grimoire. Sorry to not post them here, but it's a bit lengthy. (hint: they are fully available on the Destiny Wiki if you don't have them unlocked) *Groans then reads Grimoire Cards* Frightening, huh? Now how does this tie into the Exo Stranger? Well, The Future War Cult believes that The Device tells visions of the future, but they didn't invent The Device. They found it. Where? Siberia. Old Russia. Now who is in Old Russia that we know about? Rasputin. A WARMIND. I believe that Rasputin, working with the Ishtar Collective, created The Device in order to run simulations of his own to counter the Vex. However, the Collective needed subjects to act as vessels for Rasputin to project his simulations to the Vex. Since the Vex are machines, they naturally created their own intelligent machines to counter them: Exos. Now I'm not saying this is when the first Exos were created because that cannot be proven (hell, none of this can be proven; it is a theory after all). I am saying that this is most likely when the Exo Stranger was created, and she wasn't the only one. She was the 14th Exo in an unknown number of subjects who were to be used as vessels for Rasputin.
