Personally, when I look at the Star Trek films JJ Abrams has done, I feel this stuff:
1) The guy does awesome action scenes
2) The guy uses good filming techniques
3) The guy is very "Hollywood" Blockbuster in his approach. Its a totally decent film to see in theatres, but I have pretty much forgotten the film by the time I leave the theatre and am not especially excited to buy it on Disc to watch repeatedly. In 10 years, I will probably be unimpressed.
So basically, I feel like JJ Abrams does not have the ability to create a "Bade Runner" original epic. I hope he aims for greatness and not the best of the generic, in doing Star Wars. But I'm not expecting anything outrageously excellent and original (i.e. When The Matrix #1 came out).
What do you all think?

Lens flare.

He is a product of the Star Wars originals and was in awe of them as much of my generation was. That makes me hopeful that he will keep the original cast chemistry intact as well as his own statements saying that they are cutting back on the CG and going back to the old methods of filming, aka stop motion and models, for much of the special effects. Those are part of what made the originals so good. So I'm staying positive about it.
-
>confirmed he will not be using lens flare >made 2 amazing Star Trek movies He knows what he's doing, I have faith. I don't really care for Star Wars, so if it flops, whatever.
-
I'm cautiously optimistic. Nothing about the prequel trilogy was good. Not even the trailers. It looked awful. Force awakens on the other hand has had 2 really good tellers so far. I think with the mixture of practical and CGI effects along with members of the original cast showing up will make for an awesome movie.
-
All I can say as a fan is that it'll be fun to watch Star Wars again
-
I doubt it will be better than any of the original trilogy but from what I've seen it should be better than the prequels at least. Using actual sets and having a good writer are going to be helpful :)
-
He's a great director, I have faith in him.
-
I've watched the 2nd trailer almost a few hundred times and my friends had a debate about Mr. JJ's ability to do this movie. He knows he got the entire fan base on his ass, he knows what he's doing, and like I said, after the watching the 2nd trailer many times, I'm confident in his abilities. He got the old cast back.
-
He had a hand in my favorite movie; Super 8, so it can't be that bad.
-
I think that he'll do well. Considering how impressive the visuals and action of the new Star Trek movies are, plus that this time he has the original cast and writing team... Dis gon b gud.
-
Hey at least he's not going gorge Lucas
-
There's no way he could do worse than Jorge did making the prequels.
-
In JJ we trust.

Pre pew pew
-
Don't really care
-
Still expecting Michael Bay explosions everywhere.

Listen I give him a 10/10

He did Star Trek into Darkness. Expectations are very low.
-
About the same as DICE doing battlefront Expectations are in the gutter. With IT.
-
I think I'm going to be saying goodbye to a beloved series just as I did with Star Trek. I will watch the movies but I will constantly be reminded of the good ol' days.
-
Hell ruin it just like he botched the two "Star Trek" movies he made
-
Why does everything look shiny and brand new
-
The first trailer had me iffy. The second trailer... Less so. It looks better now. I was always one of the Expanded Universe people anyway, so for me it's more disappointing that it wasn't about someone like Thrawn (who they definitely could've ran with as a character/plot), but it does look entertaining at least.

I think that lens flares will own everyone when a lightsaber comes out

I'm optimistic. I very much agree with your third point, the guy doesn't really know how to be original and make a movie stand out of the crowd. However, I think he's gotten better as his career has progressed. He's also a huge Star Wars nerd, and I think he's going to do his best to be faithful to his audience. So while he's not my favorite directer, I'm going to be optimistic. At any rate, I know he can do better than the prequels. Plus, he knows how to make a movie fun and not super moody, which is how Star Wars is supposed to be.
