In the run-up to HoW, a lot of the guardians I speak to as I run raids are concerned or disappointed at having to leave beloved weapons and armour behind as the light and damage cap raises. So I came up with an idea to tackle this problem that I wanted to share.
Design wise it's dangerous to take away the elite value of the highest light level raid gear and new Damage capped weaponry at a level raising release where Bungie want us to run the new raid.
So with that In mind I would like to make the following suggestion to the design team moving forward:
Once the player has obtained and maxed out a legendary* item in any given weapon or armour category, the player would then unlock the ability to upgrade a legendary* item of the previous tier to the latest one. This could be done at the gunsmith. Example:
1. Player maxes out TDB hand cannon, Word of Crota to 331. Player can now upgrade any maxed to 300 legendary* hand cannon to the 331 tier.
2. Player maxes the TDB raid gear helmet to lvl 36 light. Player can now upgrade any maxed to 33 legendary* helmet to the 36 tier.
This change would add variety to builds, load-outs and character visuals in a positive way that not only protects the meaning of playing new content, but also retains the gear legacy of past releases. In this way, over multiple upgrades, even VOG content could be carried on up to cap. Old gear regains potential value and there is a reason to do older raids.
*due to the current Xur exotic upgrading system, I haven't included exotics and propose this as a legendary gear only upgrade system, cost of upgrade To be determined.
Feedback very welcome! Cheers Guardians.

Big thankyou to everyone who has voted thus far! For all we know Bungie could already have a system ready to roll out to address this but I'd love to get some discussion going :)
