The game does lack content for the volume of time the designers expect you to play for. I haven't really played much since the middle of December, and HoW is still months away. If players aren't kept invested between content drops, there won't be an audience before too long. Competition for our money will fierce come this fall, and I no longer care enough about Destiny to pony up for Comet or whatever it's going to be called.
