Theory on spaceship combat. What it could have and should have been
Within Destiny is a huge variety of ships. As you all know they are equipped to your player and you see them when in orbit, and in certain cut scenes within the game. Besides that there is no other relevance inside the game. As you know we also have a Shipwright, Amanda Holiday. The Shipwright sells very low end ships and will exchange ship schematics for the ship they represent. All in all she serves a pretty minor roll as a vendor. Now down to the theory, Destiny was supposed to have spaceship combat and more ship related content, things like: PvP competitive, PvE space missions, Free roam between satellites in space (like a space patrol) etc.

It makes sense when you think of it. Look at the emphasis put on getting a ship running in the first mission. Look at the minor role of the shipwright right now, maybe she was or is going to be much more than she is right now. Look at the variety and different classes of ships, and how they are essentially just for looks. Enemy ships are fully rendered and can take damage, however they cannot explode. Thus PvE ship combat wouldn't work. These ships apparently can't be blown up because of memory restrictions on last gen. Perhaps last gen was holding ship combat back or maybe it was cut for later down the road. At the end of the day it's only a theory I don't know, but I'm making a reasonable guess.
Another thing to look at is one of Bungie's later games, that's right you guessed it already, Halo Reach. Halo Reach has one mission within the campaign where you are a fighter pilot in space, fighting to defend a human space station. My thought is that Bungie was using Reach as a tester for the ship combat, that was supposed to manifest in the final version of Destiny The ship combat in Reach would have been PERFECT for Destiny. Just imagine roaming open space in you're favorite ship, docking on satellites and exploring them. Imagine engaging a group of fallen skiffs with your friends, or owning noobs in player vs player freaking space combat. This would have been amazing for Destiny. With all this in mind I think spaceship combat will be in a future Destiny once the last gen is dropped. Let me know what you think guardians. Does this seem plausible? Would you want spaceships in Destiny?
I'll leave you with this video of Halo Reach spaceship combat
