Okay, how about this idea?
I hear every day Guardians wanting to have their own identity when it comes to high level raid gear. Pretty much, if you want to be a 32, you've got to equip three or four pieces of raid or Iron Banner armor and an exotic. Or at least some combination thereof.
Well, we all know how shaders work to color our armor in different ways. What if we had armor holograms to make our outward appearance be whatever armor was in the hologram slot, but our light level and perks be based on whatever we are wearing?
Like the look of VoG armor, but want to be a 32? No problem. Hologram armor slot. Want to wear the Level 1 armor you were born in but be a 32? No problem. Hologram armor slot.
Just throwing out ideas to help us realize our own identity.
Edit #1: To those who are touting Transmog as the answer, I'm not sure I agree. Now, I was never a WoW player, but to my understanding, when you transmogrified a piece of armor, you basically fused the look of one piece into another piece for gold (glimmer). What you ended up with is one piece of armor that looked like one and acted like another.
That's not what I'm suggesting. What if today I want to wear my "Stormtrooper" look, but tomorrow I wanted to go with my CE gear straight up? If I transmogged my CE gear, I'm stuck with it.
My suggestion is to, for the lack of a better term, hologram the look I want over top of the armor I'm wearing. That way, I can change the look to whatever I want.
And, yes, I too believe that you'd physically have to own both pieces of gear to make it happen.
Thanks for feedback, Guardians.

Transmogrification. Vanity Slots. Either way would work for me. If you transmogrify your armor you aren't permanently stuck with it that way OP. You can just transmogrify it again to something else, or remove the transmogrification. You're not stuck with it.

Visionaries lol

Please make this happen! I have wanted this for so long!
-
You mean transmog?
-
DC Universe did this perfectly. There was one page in the menu where you equipped gear. And another where you set your appearance. Thw appearance options consisted of every piece of gear you have ever equipped. This is how it should be here. Transmog is a better idea than what we currently have, but the DCU method, like what you suggested, is far better than transmog.

Diablo III Transmog's are just changing the appearance of individual Armour/Weapon pieces. You can go back to the Mystic and change it back to the original appearance if you want to, there is no permanence to the changes. Everytime you get a new legendary/set item...you unlock the transmog for it. So that's basically what you're suggesting. Just go pay to change the look of your armour/weapons.

Bump for vanity slots

They're called "Vanity Slots" or "Costume Slots". You have two sets of armor slots. One which is where you equip the gear that provides your stats, and controls your default appearance. Then, if you want to override the appearance of one of the items, you equip another piece of gear in the Vanity slot. So for example, if you want the stats for the crota raid helmet but prefer not to look like a sad kitty or softshell crab, you would equip the raid helmet in the standard slot, and then some other helmet which looks good in the vanity slot.

Like Terraria! Nice!

"You got a BUMP!" "You got the POW-WEEEERRRR!"

My friend came up with an idea that you could take 32 armour and take the states and put it on any price of armour you want.
-
So a vanity slot?
-
Like Terraria then, but the armour actually has a visible shape.
-
I want armor that's see through so I can see my awoken titties
-
-
take a cue from DCU, you get a piece of armor and it becomes part of your look. May have to put some stipulation in like the armor must be fully leveled up for it to work.
-
So vanity slots
-
So...transmog?
-
Bump!

DCUO had a similar set up to what u are saying, & there "tower" wasn't full of the same 3 guys painted different! Much better suggestion than helmets in the tower!

I vote for vanity slots.
