Upgrading Exotics Question

Alright fellas, quick question.. I only started playing after the first DLC and have only just picked up my first exotic. Will I still need to go through the shard>upgrade process or is that just for exotics pre update?

It's not required but it's still optional. Sometimes he's got armor with higher stats than what you've already got, so you can upgrade it even if it already has 36 Light.
