Here is a brief summary: the Forerunners upheld the Mantle of Responsibility. When the sentient life absorbing Flood come about in ancient human controlled space they flee. The Forerunners believing that humanity was attacking them brutally destroyed them and reset them to a tier 7 on the scale of technological advancement. When the Ur-Didact was raised from his warrior Cryptum he took two humans and a young Builder Bornstellar Makes Eternal Lasting on a quest to stop the Master Builder Faber from lighting the Halo rings, an array of super weapons meant to kill all sentient life to starve the Flood. The Bornstellar activated the Halo array when the Flood became too powerful. After many millennia Humanity reached a tier 3 and began to colonize other planets. An Insurrection began when the UNSC took over most government functions. Doctor Catherine Halsey began a plan to create super soldiers. She succeeded with the creation of Spartan IIs. These super soldiers helped win engagements against the Innies but their eyes soon turned to the Covenant. This organization of zealous aliens had been seeking Forerunner artifacts for centuries. They found an artifact on the human world of Harvest. A long war began that ended in 2552. All but one squad of Spartans died in this war. Kelly, Linda, Fred, and John of blue team were all that lived. Master Chief Petty Officer John 117 was in almost all of the latter days of the campaign. He fought the flood an covenant across two Halos, Earth, and the Ark. John defeated the Flood and ended the Covenant. When he tried to escape the Ark his ship was split in half with him lost in space. He entered Cryogenic stasis and was brought back up by his A.I. companion Cortana. Cortana had begun entering stages of rampancy and needed to return to Catherine Halsey, her creator, for stabilization of her mind core. Chief and Cortana were trapped inside of the Shield World Requiem and met the Ur-Didact. He was seeking a machine called the Composer to turn humanity into machines as their final punishment for attacking the Forerunners. The Chief met the Didact's wife the Librarian who activate his geas. The chief became immune to Composition and is believed to have killed the Didact. Currently the Master Chief is AWOL and is being hunted by Oni agent Locke. In Halo 5 Gaurdians more will be revealed. I my have missed a bit but I recalled as much as possible aside from dates.
