Problems with Raids

So, let's begin. For those who have heard of Crota's End, played it, beaten it, whatever, you know that your main objective is to defeat Crota, a God to the Hive. So then, WHY is Crota not the most dangerous thing in the raid? He shoots the same Darkness blasts Hive Wizards do, but with only one hand. His sword is completely insta-kill, but he has no way to put an eminent threat on the Fireteam. Now you may argue that the Guardian going in with the sword may be slashed by Crota's massive blade, causing the Oversoul to potentially wipe the Fireteam, but still. He needs a climatic source of DANGER and FEAR am I right? And how about the Vault of Glass, for example, and it's super-awesome complex design. No more simple shoot and hide tactics here, folks. Teleport, grab relic, kill oracles, make it back to the Vault, cleanse everyone, hammer Atheon, repeat. GREAT! But, the only problem is the lack of PERSONAL motivation to kill Atheon. Sure, you get good rewards from it, but you have no clue WHY Atheon is a bad guy! Just a random guy who controls time or whatever. Give us a juicy backstory, Bungie!
