I've seen a ton of threads discussing the new vault space parameters. I have not seen people discussing the implications of what was said...essentially reading between the lines. I want to look at a particular excerpt.
Different players have different needs, but our goal was to find a solution that could deliver more Vault space to the greatest number of people(1) in the short term. Our challenge was to provide an increase in storage that fit within the memory constraints (2)that limit how many items can be displayed on one screen. (3)This had to be accomplished by a team who is simultaneously working on future content. (4)We opted for making sure that players would have enough slots for all Exotics from Launch through House of Wolves - thus the largest increase in slot space is for weapons.
As shown, the bold and underlined aspects of the excerpt lead me to believe a few things.
1. This is a short term fix. I would imagine mainly for new gen consoles considering the problems with old hardware listed further on in the article.
2. The limit is for how many items that can be displayed on one screen. We have already seen what looks like a leak of a 2nd tower in the reef. Whether there will be another vault of some sort is unknown, but there is the possibility. If the vault is limited to what can be seen on one screen then it would make sense to have another vault or even the option to scroll between vault pages for weapons, armor, accessories.
Another thought is that with future DLC after the HoW more space will be required. At that time due to the notable size of the DLC we know as "Comet" a more permanent solution will be implemented.
3. Future solutions that may be what we were expecting in the short term are still being worked on.
4. HoW is upon us. - Due to DLC content being released in the near future, a solution or "patch" was required to accommodate new gear. If I remember correctly, this game was likened to a living breathing project. More vault space might not have been really planned for until "Comet". In this instance then Bungie is doing their utmost to cater to the requests, albeit demands, of the community. I want to believe the reason why this "patch" is being implemented, and the reason why it seems so paltry, is because a) they care a great deal about the finished product and b) because they want things to go as smoothly and bug free as possible.

Solution: When you open the vault it takes you to a main vault menu with Weapons, Armor and Item tabs. When you select one of them the screen transitions over to a Weapon screen, Armor screen or Item screen, each of which has a 60 item capacity. This way you have only 60 things displayed at one time (so you can bring back the item comparison tool) and vault space is tripled.

Community - Bungie please patch Cheese. Bungie - Ok Community - This is not what we wanted Community - Please fix heavy ammo bug Bungie - Ok Community - This is not what we wanted Community - Give us more vault space Bungie - Ok Community - this is not what we wanted I could add more but you get the point. This community will NEVER be pleased, EVER! If I were Bungie, I would shut down the servers tell everybody to -blam!- off. But that's just me.

You're right, this is a temp fix until they think of a more permanent one. One way i've said they couldve temp fixed the vault: open up all 60 slots instead of limiting based on item (weapon, gear, general). This wouldve helped 'free' up space cause some of the current space is barely used. Ex: I rarely use my gear space because all the gear i own is on my characters, so that's 20 spaces i couldve used for other things. Anyway, i appreciate the temp fix they're gonna give us. I've run out of weapon space, but not out of weapons to collect.

It's called a second page..... Mind blown.

Finally, some competence. I agree with everything OP said, but whether it's true or not remains to be seen. Only time will tell. 😞

Too little too late.

What I don't understand is why Bungie can't give more details on what they mean by " it became clear that we would be pushing very limited memory constraints on older generation hardware". What the hell are they referring to? CPU memory, HDD Space, some how pushing the RAM? I hate when they don't want to be specific. And as my main point is HOW is it pushing memory constraints? Almost everything on Destiny is server based. The server saves it for you, it's not like you have a save file on your system. (Just to let inform I use the PS3). NO company ever wants to say what the issue is, they just beat around the bush like Bungie does a lot. You can't expect a company to deliverer a promising game when they can't even be transparent.

Seriously, the UI should've been designed to scroll from the start, then each section is just taken from a mutable list and it's length is decided base on how many items are in there. Any common iphone app, even made By One Developer has better UI. 1. They really expect us to believe that a system such as the ps3, can't display a hundred or so thumbnails? Seriously? 2. See opening statement. Short version, poor project lead, poor UI design. 3. Well let's hope so. There really isn't much of an excuse. 4. Cool. So basically, I'm not whining about me wanty moor space or anything, I don't care. I have a level 5 Titan which is my secondary vault. I just think the excuses given to us seem like blatant lies.

The update said one thing to me. Dev's need to STOP making games that fit 2 gens of consoles! It's holding back how good games can be. I've been saying this for over a year. Yet again I've been shown how true point of view is.
-
What the update might be really is saying is that due to the support they have to give to old gen consoles your next expansion will not show anything "new" just more of a cosmetic face lift to content already available in the game. The fact they cant work around those things because of the old consoles really scares me on the future expansions and content that can be added to this game.

Vaults should be on your ship.
-
you do make a solid stament and vaults and your chars inventory have issues loading but 84 items theressaying can be displayed from the vaoul even looseing 34 of thouse to create a tabed system would be realy grand and as to second vault it would be wonderfull but then have to rember were i put that dang gun lol
-
I looked at the update and saw the 36 gjallarhorns there. And I thought: "Oh, so that's where they all are."
-
All in all I think for what Bungie is trying to accomplish things have gone very well and I think the game is awesome. I guess I'm just constantly reminded of halo before custom games, forge, ranking, armour customisation, etc...Halo gradually grew into something more. But it took time and multiple titles to do it.

Edited by IheartOobs: 3/28/2015 3:27:25 PMWhy don't they also include a movable "cargo" area on our ships that acts like a vault in orbit? It would be SOOOO much more convenient. They could also program it from scratch to have a TON of slots for items. Just cache any extra memory they need from the hard drive. I am not very technically savvy, but I just don't understand why this stuff has to be so complicated with lots of loading screens and areas that are not necessary for loot holding.

You do know that HoW is supposed to give more storage for emblems shaders and ships right?
-
That we are getting more vault space
-
So they couldn't find a way to make 3 pages of items, they had to do it all on the same page.... Idk bungie, what is going on in your little heads? All i hope is they actually do somthing for HoW, or this game is doomed. I came to a full stop, and mostly play cuz my friends are, and that's for not more then 4h a week. Now iv played well to much. My xbox can't keep track no more, but i do know that i still don't have a Ghorn, and that my play time is minimized... So by now i couldnt care less about vault space, I'm searching for new experiences.
-
I simply dont understand ... 1- why they made such a small vault ... i mean you get a lot of weapons and shit and you have to dismantle the, 2- why they have not upgraded it YET. I have some SW expertise and I simply dont get it. OK OK there are implications, but when i hear a company explaining the problems rather than focusing on the solution, I tend to worry ;)
-
Why does bungie not just make it so that all the vaults in the tower are for a different set such as weapons armor etc. instead of all of them just leading to the same thing
-
Like the last tag
-
And what i dont like is people complaining about the space they are giving are u searious i am happy cuz bungie is actually listening to the community issues but no people is just ungrateful :/
-
There should be backpacks IMO
-
Sure they care about the "finished product" why would they not? And with every single release of anything they want it bug free, but these two things don't explain why we cant adjust volume settings, skip cut scenes, use ammo syn from the first person view, among any of the other abundance that is fundamentally flawed with this game. hate to be the negative nancy, but when I signed the petition for more vault space, I didn't realize a lot that was wrong and the direction of this game.
-
Didn't they say something about making room for all the exotics they're making for HoW. Because that is such BS if So because all those weapons are on the disc already,so they're already made.
-
I'm still waiting for my Gjallarhorn Bungie! If I don't get it before House of Wolves is released I'll be really mad!
