Forerunner hull plating is ridiculously powerful, and can withstand gigatons, if not petatons of damage.
It really depends how powerful the lava gun is.

Do we know how fast they are fired? The other thing is that I noticed it's plasma. Here's the thing, if the plasma, fire, or heat isn't melting the rock, then it's entirely negligible. It may as well be firing a rock without the heat.

The wiki article stated that they have a reletively low firing speed (at least compared to the typical Star Wars blaster bolt.) They also have to pull ammo from a source in order to fire. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/111643766/0/0/1 Here's the thread.
