UPDATES 1-3, with TLDR/SUMMARY located at the bottom of the page.
Bungie,
Thank you! Thank you for hearing us, and giving us an increase in the vault space. Thank you for also giving us some details, statistics, and insights into how things look from your end. It is very helpful to us. We appreciate the detailed answer to our questions regarding the vault space. Hopefully you realize your work is not done.
I have spent a lot of time reading the feedback from the community regarding this matter. Many of your most loyal customers, your most invested fans, the most hard-core players, feel this increase is underwhelming. We feel this is not nearly enough to accommodate all the game has to offer currently, and especially not enough when future DLC is released. When HoW drops, we will be right back in the pain that we are currently feeling.
"JH: Very few people have completely full Vaults, but a lot of endgame players are bumping up against the limits. For example, 21% of players who are level 30+ have 4 or fewer free spaces in their weapon Vaults right now. The armor and general sections are slightly less full for most people, but not by much. Even at lower levels, there’s a small but measurable fraction of players under level 20 who have full Vaults. You could charitably think of them as “collectors” or uncharitably label them as “packrats,” but some people just flat out like holding onto their stuff."
The reason why our vaults are not full is because we have 3 characters full of stuff. We need the vault space in order to move things between our characters, that's why it's not completely packed full at the moment. A full vault doesn't give us the flexibility we need, so we leave some space open. Even then, the limited amount of gear that we have now is simply because we've been breaking down many duplicates that we would otherwise have wished to keep. The numbers that you're seeing, is a stripped down version of what many of us would like to keep, but are currently unable to because of the restrictive space. Are you looking at the statistics of how many items we had to dismantle in order to keep it down to those 4 empty spaces in the vault? What about the number of players using the Postmaster as extra storage space? For those players who like to hold on to their stuff, I don't see why that's a bad thing. If players want to have 3 copies of each exotic so they don't have to constantly switch between players, then the game should allow for that. Even if many people don't want to invest the time required to do that, lots of us do. Let us play your game as much as we want. The current restrictions do not allow your most loyal fans the breathing room they need.
"Different players have different needs, but our goal was to find a solution that could deliver more Vault space to the greatest number of people in the short term. Our challenge was to provide an increase in storage that fit within the memory constraints that limit how many items can be displayed on one screen."
Why does the Vault Space need to be limited to only one screen? There have been numerous posts in the forums suggesting the idea of having multiple screens in the vault, why have those been ignored? I agree you definitely need to address the most people in the shortest amount of time (7 months is short?) but don't ignore the top 21% of your loyal fans. We have needs too. :)
"We know there are a bunch of players in the world who don’t have enough space for Armor and General items. We’ll have a solution for you in the future."
In my earlier thread about our "1st World Problems", (https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/87629716/0/0) I asked for some temporary relief while you find a better long-term solution that will work with the current boundaries and constraints you are dealing with. I feel this qualifies as a temporary solution. Thank you! Now keep going, please. :) I'm very happy to hear that you agree this isn't enough.
"In the case of the Vault expansion, it became clear that we would be pushing very limited memory constraints on older generation hardware. We had a choice: leave the Vault as-is, or find some kind of compromise to enable it safely. We weighed the options, with player feedback in mind, and decided to move forward with the expansion by disabling the item comparison feature within the Vault on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Item comparison will continue to function within the Vault on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and in all other contexts on all platforms."
I found this to be particularly helpful in understanding why this has taken so long to implement. It sounds to me like you are running up against the boundaries of what is possible on the older platforms. If this is true, what hope does the future hold? Would giving the vault multiple screens push past those boundaries? In any case, thank you for giving us some idea of what challenges you are running up against, this helps us give you better feedback if we understand what is within the realm of possibility, and what isn't.
"We may not be making you as rich as Charlemagne, but those of you who have Vaults that are bursting at the seams with sweet loot are in for some relief. Stand by, because Update 1.1.2 arrives in April. As for what the future holds for Vaults, only a time traveler would know for sure."
Thank you for the temporary relief, it is appreciated. Very much. Please understand, this isn't nearly enough. Not by a long shot. I don't know the exact numbers, but there are way more unique items in the game than there are spaces between the vault, and 3 characters. If your most loyal players, your biggest fans, the cream of the crop, if they want to keep 3 copies of every exotic, every legendary from each raid, every legendary from the Iron Banner, and even some of their other favorite random Legendaries, as well as keep multiple stacks of consumables and other currency/materials, then this game needs to be able to accommodate that, or you will continue to lose your very best players, and be left with nothing but fair-weather fans, and medocrity. The reason why the community is so heated about this is because WE LOVE THIS GAME! We love what Destiny is, and have high hopes for what it can become. Right now, I feel like a disappointed parent, seeing how much potential my child has, knowing he is woefully underperforming his potential.
REQUEST TO THE COMMUNITY: I know you're pissed. We all are. This is the most disappointing news we've received in a long time. But please, try to keep things positive and helpful. Don't turn this into a flame war on Bungie, that's not helpful, not constructive. Thanks!
If you agree with this post, please Like and Comment. Keep bumping and trending!
UPDATE 1: Here is a fantastic idea: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0
UPDATE 2: Here is a summary of all of the ideas suggested by the community. Bungie, please review these and get back to us with your plan.
* By far, the best solution: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0 Not only is what we want, but this is also what the game needs. This will definitely put this issue to rest once and for all.
* If single screen gives legacy support issues, then break up the vault into multiple screens. If 60 can safely be displayed, give us 60 primary weapons, 60 special weapons, 60 heavy weapons, 60 helmets, 60 gauntlets, 60 chest, 60 legs, 60 consumables, 60 materials, 60 shaders, 60 ships, etc. Break them out into tabs so it's not all on one screen.
* Give us an online only vault. Make it accessible only by the companion app, or by bungie.net - that would also remove legacy conerns.
* Break out the vault into the 3 different consoles in the tower where the vault currently sits. Have each tower be a different category. This would also be a temporary fix until you can implement a permanent vault fix.
* Remove stack limits on General items such as 20 for ammo synths, 200 for planetary materials, etc.
* Put an additional vault in the Reef when the new social space goes live.
* Allow the vendors to sell bags that can hold multiple items, but be stored in one inventory square.
* Make adjustments to materials - see this thread: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/112786601/0/0
* Give each character their own individual vault in addition to the shared vault for all 3 characters.
* Above all, please don't wait another 7 months to address this again. A game based entirely around loot should not force it's most loyal players to dismantle the majority of the loot we'd like to keep. That makes this entire grind pointless.
Community, did I miss anything?
Bungie, we hope you find these solutions helpful. Please communicate with us. Thank you!
UPDATE 3: Here is my vault: http://imgur.com/JvL273l This is pre-HoW. My characters are full as well.
TLDR/SUMMARY:
1. Thank you for the upcoming vault increase!
2. The increase is not enough to accommodate all the game currently has to offer. Especially not after new DLC.
3. We don't have full vaults because we need empty spaces to properly use the vault. Re-evaluate this need. It does exist.
4. We are being forced to dismantle most of the loot we find. (in a game based entirely around loot, makes it frustrating)
5. Don't limit the vault to 1 screen. Will that work with last gen consoles?
6. 1.1.2 Update is only a temporary band-aid for a bullet-hole sized problem.
7. We love this game! We are excited to see what it can become!
8. The vault space concept that will put this issue to rest once and for all: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0
9. Other ideas mentioned by the community.
10. Picture of current player's vault.

/bump Keep hope alive.

The reason that the link you out in your post will never work, is because of the old gen consoles. The concept of an intricate vault system is something that the old gen can't comprehend as the current gen consoles can. This happened with a lot of other games like gta, the old gen consoles simply prevent current gen consoles from being at their full potential because companies do not want to make a game on a newer console feel more advanced than on the older ones. It will hurt the sales of the game. It is a smart thing to do by bungie and other game companies in terms of marketing, but it makes so many gamers mad.
-
Been saying this for a while now but throwing it out again. I want one big box. Not 3 separate boxes. My armor tab is contantly empty, while my weapons and consumables are a constant tile sliding game. Those extra armor vault slots do nothing for me, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone there.
-
I agree with what he is saying. I have dismantled a lot of weapons to keep room for its single self. No matter what stats you bring to the table, their is always a reason why you won't see it our way. But keep up the good work. Can't wait for the DLC. And remember! Whether Playstation or Microsoft. All GAMERS!! deserve all the same content.

Perhaps the vault isn't being scrapped for purposes of future builds? It seems stripped down to begin with. Its obvious they wanted us to have some type of limited out game management. We have an app for that. Clearly, this vault is a stripped down version of much grander vault. Imo, vaults and items should stay character bound. The current and even yet to be released build is chock full if features we dont need. At least, we dint need those features on that screen, at that time. Its poor code management. We are inundated with superfluous code. Exclude it, make it an option for everyone. This improves EVERYONES experience.

Lol thanks for the TLDR/Summary :D
-
Very well put. I have 2 maybe 3 slots open in each weapon category on all 3 guys and no open slots in my vault at all. Each of my characters have between 12 and 18 packages in the mail that I don't have room to even open..... while appreciated this space increase is no where near sufficient

*poke* Bungie? Are you there?

Bump again!

Edited by Kardain: 4/2/2015 8:39:16 PM
2. The increase is not enough to accommodate all the game currently has to offer. Especially not after new DLC. 3.
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, what about a shared vault and individual vault? The shared vault would work as it does now. An individual vault would be tied to that character. It could effectively double vault space, though system resources may still be a bottleneck. Also: bump

Thank you for this post. On a side note, my vault is also well furnished with exotic weapons in doubles and legendary engrams because: #1 when the HoW expansion ships, I want to get new light levelled gear asap. #2 I still clinging to the hope that trading, in any form, will one day be implemented in Destiny. I'll then finally be able to trade / give extra weapons my friends want but don't get with RNG.

Fantastic post, I only hope bungie read it and at least acknowledge it with a quick "we hear you" post, I fear however that won't happen as the rarely if ever acknowledge anyone, this however doesn't detract from the quality of the post and the truths spoken here, the designs for the vaults are exactly what alot of people would like to see and hopefully they understand this.
-
I've never had a problem with vault space and don't imagine I will. Let Bungie work on important stuff. The vault space issue is actually not an issue for most people. People create one because they can't dismantle their dupes or are hoarding trophies that no one but them can see. You don't need 5 icebreakers and 5 hawkmoons!
-
Not sure if anyone has similar suggestions to this but if not here's my post with image links for examples. If it's already been mentioned then sorry I missed it. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/112786601/0/0

Most of us don't agree with your passive-aggressive "compliment sandwich". The added vault space will be more than fine (hoarders not included). Go fill the vault space of life.
