I've heard god doesn't hate the sinner but the sin so why do people still fear him *more of my tears drip on to your face*

Simple! By fear we mean obey His commands and stuff. We don't truly fear Him, but we fear things like the consequences that come from not obeying Him. He's a loving and caring God, so we don't fear him in the way you'd think.
