Like many others I'm sure, I downloaded Bioshock Infinite for free as part of the games with gold for March, and bought the first Bioshock for $5. (probably won't get the 2nd unless it's cheap and seems worth it).
Does it matter what order I play them in? Is there a way that will be more fun?
I heard the story is unrelated but I'd still like an experienced player's opinion.

Absolutely play the original first!
-
I think you should play bioshock 1 first. Just trust me.
-
I personally only like the original. I would say that playing the original, skipping the second title and then playing Infinite. It makes the most sense, in my opinion.
-
Yeah. 1. Bioshock 2. Bioshock annually after that. That is all.
-
Just be sure to play 1 before 2 or Infinite, so you can understand what universe you're playing in.
-
I would play 1 first It's better than infinite in my opinion, especially when you consider how long ago it came out

Edited by Murph Tha Smurf: 3/21/2015 4:18:31 PMInfinite is kind of unrelated to the other two. However, I would play the first one first to get the most out of infinites ending.

Bioshock Infinite has pretty much nothing to do with the first one, so you're fine. Play it in whichever order you want!
-
You could play the first couple minutes of Bishock 1 then play Infinite and you'll get the most of the references.
-
Unless your seriously into the story behind Rapture then it doesn't matter. I've lost count of the number of times I've played Bioshock 1+2. I only played Infinite once. Enjoy youself bro, it's what Bioshock is really about :-)

Play the original, and then Infinite. Ignore the sequel.

I loved the first. Liked the second less because of things that carry over from the end of the first. I've been playing infinite since I downloaded it and its been good.
-
Infinite is separate from 1 and I wouldn't honestly play infinite first. In my top 3 games of all time, amazing.
-
You'd be fine skipping it. I liked infinite but u beat it pretty fast.

Personally I found the first two were by far the best. They were definitely more dark than infinite. Although infinite has the sky rails which is really fun to use; I found mainly killing cops and bad guys less fun than killing insane splicers. Also the weapon upgrades were more noticeable in the first two. All 3 games are great fun and will hopefully be coming out with a new one soon for the next gen

Play 1. Then brace yourself for a more-of-the-same-yet-still-downgraded sequel. Don't bother with Infinite, it's a terrible game lauded by hipsters for its contrived plot that almost has enough holes to engulf itself.

the stories are in no way unrelated... whomever said that is a dunce. play it 1, infinite, 2. it's the order of quality. BS1 doesn't look great now, but it was amazeballs in 2006. 2 changed too much and the writing wasn't as good. and it feels kinda half-baked to fit in a shoe-horned MP mode. you need the DLC for infinite(burial at sea 1&2[complete BS1 first]) and BS2 because they add story missions/add to the lore. 2 had a laggy, half-assed MP that's now dead. ignore those MP only dlc packs... either way, DO NOT play infinite without beating BS1 first. BaS is the part of BSI that ties the whole series together in one sad but mind-blowing twist that only makes sense if you beat the main game first... RIP Irrational Games. no more bioshocks or infinite DLC.

There is a reference at the end of Bioshock infinite that makes more sense if you've played the first, but isn't necessary. The Burial at Sea DLC for Bioshock Infinite is heavily connected to Bioshock 1 though. The chronological order is Bioshock infinite, Burial at Sea, Bioshock 1, Bioshock 2.
