My friends and I had a minor dispute about why Xur is even in the game. I thought it might be interesting to see what the community has to say.

Exotic =/= rare. ;)

Close these forums all together and the complaints stop.

People complain about RNG. People complain about RNG's nemesis, Xur. People complain about everything in destiny
-
I think we almost went two minutes without a Xur thread being created. Good catch.

Can we get a simple, yes, no, or other?

Think about this, with Xûr in the game you have 2 ways of getting exotics. Either earn some coin from the Weekly Heroic and buy them or run the hamster wheel and rinse and repeat until the RNG wheel of fortune spins in your favour. The problem here my friend, is that some players have fallen into the trap that is RNG. They have become addicted to the hamster wheel and feel any "reward" dished out by lady luck was "justly deserved and rightly earned" when the fact is they weren't. These rare and exotic guns you speak of were just handed out as the result of a spin of the wheel, a roll of a dice. RNG doesn't care about skill or what you do, it just makes a roll at set points in the game. RNG doesn't care if you ran the VoG 100 times or just once when it hands you a Ghorn. It doesn't care if you have a 3+ KD or a 0.17 when it hands you an exotic at the end of the Crucible. That is why any exotic acquired via RNG is never earned, as they are simply handed out on the bases of luck. Some players need to stop deluding themselves and see the game for what it really is. The way players keep running the VoG each week in the hope of getting an exotic "reward" is the same as the guy who keeps shoving money into a slot machine each week to get a "jackpot". It's like an addiction and it's just a cheap and clever device used by games companies to keep you playing. Players who buy stuff from Xûr generally understand this and on the whole are not suckered in by the other mechanics of the game.

Xur is in to counter the RNG nature of the game. And it's kinda exciting to see what he will have every weekend.

Xur is Bungie's answer to not having weapon trading in Destiny.
-
He should have sold legendary engrams and exotic bounties, but have armor bounties and weapon bounties. That way we would have more to do
-
Xur is the perfect balance to Rng
-
Hard light and patience and time are the ONLY exotics o got from him, everything else he sold the week after I got the exotic. Armor on the other hand doesn't drop as often as weapons. Only legendaries and nightfalls so Xur is a good addition to get exotics
-
Yes. In a game that restricts access to weapons it is nice to have something to look forward to each week in the hope you can buy the weapon that you want. A weapon you may not get otherwise. I really want the suros and hawkmoon out of the four I need. I can't get them to drop over multiple thunder Lords or no exotic at all so it would be nice to look forward to xur arriving and seeing him selling it. it would make the next 10 chests/death singers/nightfall crap worth doing

Xur is not for the people who have all these things, who have hundreds of strange coins. Xur is there for the newer players who have little of value and can't easily get strange coins. Getting 13 strange coins can be a challenge for a lvl 24 with little to no legendary gear. That's what makes Xur so special. For those of us who are Lvl 30+, Xur isn't intended for us anymore. We might still have use of him, but he is really there just to give lower level players a boost and relieve them from a painful RNG grind up. Raising xur's prices would defeat that purpose, as lower level players would never even be able to get stuff from Xur for a long time. If he wasn't in the game at all, there's a good chance that most of us may never receive the exotic we wanted. Even if most of these people find him worthless now, he was a great help in the beginning of the game, as he was supposed to be. Xur is good for Destiny, given the state of the game's loot system.
-
The idea of Xur is good, it was how they programmed him that ruined it.
-
Who cares anymore...
-
I'm going to say no, but it's not xur himself, or that he's a vendor of end game gear. I feel as though all exotics should be acquired through bounties only. Xur should sell multiple random exotic bounties per week. This would end the "earned" debate.
-
I think it's fun Friday's with xur!! I love buying engrams although I think they are way overpriced while his other gear is so goddamn cheap!!!! But I really like xur and don't understand the fuss!?
-
To consistent more rng
-
Xur is important to Destiny because of RNG. There are people with incredible luck and dismiss him as useless. Then there are people like me who have horrible luck and depend heavily on him for exotics.
-
Xûr should be more expensive Most players have 100+ coins and there is nothing else to use them on so they have no real value
-
Exotics don't make the player. Raid gear does. You can get to 31 on tower gear and exotic armor but not 32. As the game moves forward to light caps of 36 or more that disparity between the casual players like me and the hard core gamers will grow and grow. Don't worry peeps there's plenty of time to tell the world how good you are and it's coming soon.
-
Just find all the ghosts and free your mind bruh
-
I think exotics should be only available after doing hard tasks such as the thorn bounty.
-
I feel like Xûr was added so players could obtain exotics more easily. Because if you remember in a e3 presentation you got loot for killing bosses instead, so back then you would farm bosses to get good loot. Since that got removed it would've been much more difficult to get exotics. Thus Xûr was added.
-
If not for xur I wouldn't have three of the five exotic pieces that I do. I got P&T as a drop and I got invective from partially doing that bounty.

Interview w Bungie developer said that buying weapons was the plan from the start. RNG was just an exciting "bonus".
