Last night I (and consequently a friend I was running and gunning with) was invited to a Fireteam to take on VoG on normal. We complied a team of 6, half of whom had never run VoG before ever, including my friend. We breezed all the way to Atheon, each person carrying their weight. It took us 5 tries with Atheon to get to the point of winning. On our final attempt before calling it quits for the night, while I and the other two vets were in the Past portal, two of the three new guys outside died. The last guy... trooper that he was... held his own as best he could but ended up dying... JUST AS WE EXITED THE PORTAL. We three survivors finish off Atheon and there was much rejoicing. Everyone got something good in their stocking from RNGsus and the n00bs were beyond excited in having completed their first VoG from start to finish.
It's experiences like this that keep bringing me back to this game. When new players need a seasoned body to help them through, allowing them the time and understanding for them to gain experience in the game, then relive through them the joy of completing a task previously insurmountable... it's literally the best.
(An aside: This same friend had just completed the Nightfall and three Crota normal Raids with me and other friends, from scratch each time. He make quite a killing last night and had a blast. And he held his own, too, for a Level 28, now 30. So proud and happy for him.)
