Use exotic shard to upgrade or buy upgrade from xur?

I can upgrade my helm by buying an exotic shard. However I can also use a shard to buy the next version of the helm from xur. Which is the best way to use the shard? The new helm from xur just had some extra strength.

if its same as the new helm ie 36 light then just use the shatd on your existing one because you will still need a shard to max the one xur sells, the upgrade resets all xp on the helm so you have to start again
