(I guarantee Xur won't sell this one)
"And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall. And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the last of the gay. And the flames of the tripods expired. And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all."
"The Masque of the Red Death"
~ Edgar Allan Poe, 1842 ~

Posted this on DestinyDB a while back: I might be going out on a limb here, but I think the name of this comes from The Masque Of the Red Death, a short story by this guy named Edgar Allan Poe. In the story, interestingly enough, Poe's description of the Red Death, a deadly disease, was almost identical to the symptoms of Ebola. Keep in mind that Ebola did not exist when Poe was alive. So the name could be simultaneously social commentary and a literary analogy. Either way, this means you could be killing your enemies with Ebola when you use this gun.
