You are correct; AP now has little utility in crucible. The penetration only occurs on very thin objects, and is inconsistent. This is a sad day, as AP was so fun to use. Following the patch, I roll with snapshot, final round, and surplus.

I used a 300 sniper with AP to mess around on Valus strike and they worked in the cheese spot.

They don't go through thicker walls anymore, so in PVP it isn't nearly as useful anymore
