Destiny is set 200 million years in the future
13.4 billion years ago, the first stars kindled out of darkness, seeding the future of all life.
This is the in game description for starfire protocol, a warlock chest. However, the oldest known star is only 13.2 billion years old. Therefor, we can deduce that the game is set 200,000,000 years in the future.

200,000,000 years from now... Sentient space robot soldiers will be fighting magic alien creatures with a bolt action rifle with iron sites. I mean yes, they have laser guns and magic guns that regenerate ammo or turn you invisible or melt targets or fire missiles that track, but why use those? Better to stick with old reliable. If it was good enough for my great, great grandpa when he was fighting the [url=http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law]-godwinslaw!-[/url], it's good enough for an Awoken male fighting Cabal on Mars.
