Maybe I'm lucky to have been so competitive from my early days to now, but the Word of Crota dislike I've seen has always had me curious about the choices of players. Well. I finally got it to drop and attached it to my recently upgraded 32 Titan (he's now 32 for both striker and defender with no one modifier being 100% and majority of both being in the grenade and super columns), took it out into the exclusion zone to see how it would compare to the 800 lbs planet destroying Cabal and I'll let it's statistics line itself up.
The fire rate is supremely better then Fatebringer in the sense the recoil of Fatebringer required what I call a "blind judgement" where the eye, without proper hand eye coordination, could force a missed shot because it couldn't find a target. This is what a hand cannon properly balanced should be doing: To control and mitigate recoil AND have a decent fire rate.
Word of Crota is a one of a kind at that sort of balance.
Second: Impact. It is a 934 to 900 crit, varying distancing also including with a majority of it hitting at 203 for major Cabal crits. At 331? I don't doubt the mathematics behind this WILL put it at the 300-500 range of Fatebringer PRIMARILY because has dependencies and stats lined up with Fatebringer.
Range. Fatebringer wins this one, but as the most recent updates indicate? Bungie intends to show hand cannons as a closer range to impact weapon. What this does? Mitigate the need for shotgun RANGES in combination with power couplings.
While you can't see it in your mind's eye right now, you will notice the sheer power of Swordbreaker WILL get stronger as a collective whole because of what Word of Crota combined with the recent update has shown to the player population. This naturally makes Word of Crota a better muscle memory training option to those players who continue to be strategically smart and competitive in the coming months of Destiny.
Stability and Reload. As I already said Word of Crota wins on both. A 12 clip with a better reload and reduced range highlights the consistency of what makes Destiny even a tiny bit competitive. With Fatebringer showing the distance effect and willingness to get players kills across Destiny both PvE and PvP you don't have to worry about the situational guns anymore.
While I am not with Bungie I do see the design flow ideas at work here. For those of who like shotguns? Be prepared for the next few weeks because if they are looking to add content, bring new stuff to the table, ect. these things Deej has shown us can only lead to the logical evolution of environment shaping. And if they are going to nerf PvP guns or PvE environments? Then we can expect more close quarters action in the future.
That's the clue Word of Crota has shown. Heck, all the raid guns so far are pointing at it. With reduced ranges comes the need to maintain the environments design from completely creative down to the competitive elements which make it possible for us to maneuver so efficiently. Take heed guardians. Word of Crota has all the makings of Fatebringer minus the firefly for a reason. You might find yourself facing down stronger and more powerful enemies in the future.
Use this thread to discuss what you want for the future. Do you want more weapons like _________ handcannon or scout rifle? Do you want more environments which favor close quarters? How about more majors and ultras in the missions we go through?

I can't -blam!-ing stand those stupid bones, they are so clunky and block vision

Edited by SublimeSparo: 3/9/2015 5:53:52 AMI have 3 FB and 3 WoC all fully maxed. FateBringer is better 99% of the time, Most encounters in the game are of groups of enemies, while WoC wins hands down at killing one enemy quicker than FB, Due to having higher single target DPS, it cannot compete in raw multi-target DPS to a group of enemies the way FB does. Take two groups of say thralls, 10 thralls per group (such as first room omnigul strike) WoC - no brainer takes 10 shots (assuming all critical), per group. no bonus to reload speed so you are going to have to reload mid fight too. FB- will either take 1 or maybe 2 shots per group, and as outlaw will kick in you could reload between groups and still kill 20 enemies quicker than with word. Basically Word is only better at killing high health single targets - Hive majors in particular... but why not use a shotgun/ sniper/ Fusion on majors to kill them more quickly/ efficiently and use FB for the much better crowd control, the firefly usually does about 1k damage to close by enemies (possibly more, will make a vid next time i'm on ps4) making the actual DPS output ridiculous1.5k+(x*1k) x is the number of nearby enemies- the more enemies the greater the DPS from the example above 1.5+(9*1) = 10,500 damage from one maybe two shots

Edited by B1urstD: 3/10/2015 10:18:48 PMIf you are testing weapons on anything less than level 32/33 targets you're doing it wrong. The damage slope falls hard for weapons that are less than 331 once you get into the new content. Fayebringer vs preDLC=win WoC on new content =win The drop off for Fatebringer will be even sharper when enemies are further leveled.
-
You said it yourself WoC doesnt have firefly. For me thats what makes fatebringer so good for pvp I would rather use my hawkmoon anyway only used woc for thorns void part
-
fatebringer, best pve primary ever. simple. obviously selling the WoC isnt as easily stated.
-
As of right now the difference is enough to really matter, firefly wins hands down simple while I will still take my fatebringer into nightfall on arc burn just because it dominates and will when they raise the lvl of nightfall in the next dlc unless I get another arc hand cannon just like I will take my word into void nightfalls as it will still dominate I chose the fatebringer because it handles better and it has firefly, I would always run word if it had firefly, so it's not all about the guns and damage its about the perks
-
The problem is not the gun or the stats on it. The problem are the perks. Explosive Rounds and Hive Disruptor cancel the Phantom Gift-perk. It's a massive design flaw that was already present on the Black Hammer where they ultimately deactivated the HD-perk.
-
Bro you're boss and very smart
-
Word does 2% more damage, unless it's against hive majors. Fatebringer has considerably better perks.
-
You are a butthurt filthy casual who can't get fatebringer, get gud scrub
-
"WoC has better reload" You forgot about outlaw
-
The only negative things about the Word I've noticed are: 1). The bones kind of obstruct target acquisition at times. 2). The Phantom Gift perk and Hive Disruptor do not work together, not really a big deal but still kind of annoying. Other than those two things I love it!
-
Red Hand IX and why its better than fatebringer and word of crota It just is. Word of crota has lower DPS and fatebringer is an outdated weapon with fixed perks that aren't even that great. GIT YOU ONE!
i made a borderlands reference : )
-
The perks don't compare, this argument is always so stupid. Everyone wants to feel special with the Word of Crota and it blinds them. Every time. I would never use WoC over Fatebringer unless it was a void burn situation or against give majors. Period.

Edited by JayceeRrrr: 3/9/2015 4:45:51 AMMine didn't just drop today, but I've had the gun for awhile now. I have five now. It doesn't replace fatebringer since it doesn't have that arc firefly perk. They're both different, but fatebringer edges out because of its arc firefly. WOC does have faster fire rate, and it does have void. I use it in VoG if I play gatekeeper cp or whenever there's a lot of praetorians around. I don't think it replaces fatebringer because fatebringer is supremely better with arc firefly, but it has its use like fatebringer. I certainly won't go without fatebringer in the abyss, for example.
-
I'm kinda worried fatebringer will become obsolete with the House of Wolves
-
I prefer my Fatebringer. Word of Crota is great and all, but I don't find myself enjoying the overall feel of the weapon. You make very valid points, but outlaws' speed reload feels twice as fast as the speed reload perk on WoC. Also, Fatebringer is overall superior perk wise while compared to WoC. Don't get me wrong, I like both weapons and use them both, but the answer to which one is better is extremely clear.
-
The Word and the Fate aren't comparable because they're simply for two different lines of work. The Fate is the trash clearing weapon and that is simply not debatable. The Word is meant for eliminating higher ranking give without sacrificing special or heavy ammo. Outside of the CE raid or simply fighting high level hive the Word is mediocre at best with legendary handcannons like the Red Hand IX, Venation III, and Timur's Lash available.

TL; dr
-
Nope you're high
-
If pvp had more long range maps I would play it all the time. I currently only really play when combined arms comes up. I used to enjoy the fast paced close quarter fighting in CoD MW1 but I now enjoy long range sniper battles of cat and mouse. I'm garbage at pvp regardless though, at least let me get destroyed in the combat style of my choosing haha
-
Word of Crota is alright. I'm sure during a Void burn nightfall I'll enjoy it, but until then I'm unimpressed. Prefer the FB and Fang.
-
Or it's because they're both raid Handcannons
