I'm a little confused on how reporting works now. Like, is 'Hide' the new 'Report'? Is that how we let mods know if something is against the rules? Would that mean that the 'Dislike' button is just to filter out poor threads?
I'm just super curious about this and would like some sort of clarification. Maybe I'm just too used to a button that says 'Report'.

Edited by Recon Number 54: 1/19/2013 5:35:35 PM
Yes, that is the DC Universe "Phantom Zone". I think that it is a good metaphor for the tools.
For those who missed this topic when it was making its rounds earlier. Hide and Mute are your incredibly powerful tools. Hide should show below each and every post/comment/reply and as a "red minus sign" on the far bottom right of each topic when you are viewing the threads or a filter of the threads in the forums. There are two levels of Hide. Personal and "OMG someone light the Bat-Signal!" First off, personal. Otherwise known as "No Reason Stated". If you allow this "reason" to stay (you don't really have to select it) you are in essence saying "I just don't want to see this post ever again." If you do it to an OP or while in the Forum listing of topics, you are hiding the entire thread, all posts, all content within, all replies and comments. This Hide is from your view. Other people will still see the post(s) that you've hidden (unless they hide them as well) and the people who you have hidden will have no idea that you have chosen to hide their post or thread. Now, for the "Bat-Signal" reasons. In the pull-down, when you go to Hide content, there are currently 4 (other than "no reason given") reasons and types of behavior that our hosts really don't think have a place here. The descriptions are not precised, and it is known and understood that your personal definition of "Adult Content" may not precisely align with another member's definition of "Adult Content". Don't let that intimidate, worry or give you pause. If YOU think that it is hide-worthy AND meets any of the specific reasons... by all means, pick it. Not only will your Hide then remove the content from your sight and experience, but that report will then merge with others and eventually a review and judgement of the offending post/content/thread will be seen and dealt with by the powers that be. (sort of like the previous report system, but with better details and more computerized and technical algorithms and... stuff. Sorry, that one sort of got away from me there). But don't overlook the power, yes the POWER of your "No Reason Given". You did notice that it has a field for your personal comments, didn't you? Well, I don't know about you, but what I know about programmers tells me that if they are collecting data, they intend the use that data in one way or another, sooner or later. They just HATE the idea of bits and bytes going off to die alone in some dark corner of the database.... anyway. I would (at least based on what I know now which is precisely what you know, and that is scant little, but!) try using that field. If someone is being a douche, then put that in. If they are being sexist (but not breaking rules, just your own personal "do not cross line") then Hide 'em and put down why. Even those personal hide and reasons can and may have some value to someone other than the individual user. Oh, I almost forgot! Mute. Well. Mute is just like "Hide" except that you're banishing a whole person, or at least their user account, to your personal "Phantom Zone". The report reasons work EXACTLY the same as the Hide and to "mute a fool", you click on their avatar or membername, and select "Mute" from the popup card. Well, long read, I know. But if you are having issues or are unclear as to "what to do" when you see something that you just know "shouldn't be here", well you have incredible tools to make not only YOUR experience here better, but to help make everyone's experience better. I hope that you find the tools easy to use and effective. I have already personally seen a lot of "noise" and other content (okay, it wasn't noise, it was crap) that didn't last long when everyone decided that they didn't want to see that sort of thing in their face, and it was taken from the view of others pretty damned fast too! So, you have a say, you have the ability, you are not alone, but you can decide for yourself what is good, bad or ugly and what you are willing to accept and what you will not. Don't let the power go to your head!

I think there should be a report function independent of the hide and mute functions. The current set up is, obviously, not very clear.

You're thinking too much. If you don't want to see it, hide it. The mechanics behind that shouldn't matter. You shouldn't worry about what will happen if you hide something.

Edited by Verachi: 1/13/2013 11:07:09 PMAt first I was confused too and Recon was nice enough to explain it. The hide and mute button work as a report button.
Posted by: Achronos All bans being removed was a deliberate decision. With this update comes an entirely new set of rules. Most of the profanity filter is gone too. Lots of users were banned permanently for things that simply aren't against the rules anymore. With the Hide/Mute buttons feeding both your Personal Ignore List as well as the reporting queue, and with the moderators having a very restricted list of things they are responsible for, we felt it best to give everybody a fresh start. So far, it seems to be working well.

Posted by: Recon Number 54 Members can hide/mute to their heart's content. It will immediately alter their personal Bungie.Net experience based on their actions. The moderator is a QA check that occurs after the collective hides/mutes coalesce into a report by meeting a threshold (unknown what that is and if I were a betting man, I would imagine that it is a calculated variable based on the veracity/trust/history of the accounts who are hiding/muting). If the report is given an approval by the QA step, then the outcome is automated. I am learning more about it as it works, but if you were worried about "moderator bias/errors" or "crowdsource reporting abuse" then I would say that the design takes those potential risks into account. It is just another piece of data we can use to help you find content you want. If you want to report rule breaking, use the Hide (for content) or Mute (for users). Pick a reason (or don't). Things we care about will go to the moderators, and they'll verify it, and then the system will set punishments. Almost all of the gray area is gone, no more arbitrary bans.
If you think the post is offensive or absolutely against the rules you can choose a reason from the list and that will be sent out for moderation too. Otherwise really if its just stupid spam hiding is the best.
-
Yes. Sort of. Hiding is not exactly the same as reporting; it just makes it visible to mods that people are hiding stuff and then they can take action against it if it's bad.
-
'Hide' is a more powerful version of the 'Report' button. :)

Just hide it.
