Most likely the ending to halo 3 where someone had carved the numbers 117 into the tombstone. The combination of A: knowing that Spartans are never put down as Kia but Mia, so the world wouldn't know that he died(or was at least thought dead) and B: finishing it and not expecting a fourth game just made the scene all the more sad.
