In elemental form, phosphorus is pretty nasty stuff, particularly the White phosphorus allotrope, discovered in 1669 in Hamburg and responsible in 1943 for helping burn a city to the ground in one of the great firestorms of WW2 (magnesium incendiary bombs leveled the buildings; white phosphorus burned the people driven outside).
