What needs to happen is you need to ask the question "why do I care?" Why do you care what weapons and armor other people have? Why do you care that everyone has this or that exotic when it does nothing to hurt or hinder your playing experience?
Once you can answer those questions properly, then you may just find that the "earning" arguments and wasted frustration were nothing but a waste of time.

He cares, not because it lessens the value of exotics, but because others having good weapons lessens his value. If he had skill to go along with his guns he wouldn't care.

That is irrelevant and completely missing the point of my post. Why do you care what items other people have or the price that they paid for them when it does not affect you?

Then why does it matter what the price of exotics are? If what you say is true, and you truly do not care that others have certain exotics from xur, then his prices should not affect you either. If you want more of a challenge or value added, you can always skip out on a xur week in favor of finding the item through RNG while letting the more casual players enjoy their purchases.
