Edit 5: Please read all other edits before making a comment saying I am trolling or lying or whatever. I am really trying to be helpful. Also, it might be helpful if more people with plenty of vault space can test these theories. I am going to start saving now, but if it gets too full with desirable engrams, I will get rid of the less desirables and start saving the week before the HoW is released to be able to see if this explains why I got new stuff and some people got old stuff.
Saving your engrams for the DLC is a good idea because they will be new items, not old ones.
I saved up prior to TDB and all of my items were new items.
Anyone saying otherwise is hugely mistaken. They might be thinking about before when they updated how the Cryptarch decrypts engrams.
Back then, purple engrams had a chance to be blue items. And blue to green. They updated it so an engram can only be that color or better. If you saved legendary engrams prior to this, it would still have a chance of being a blue item.
I am guessing that is where all the engram confusion came from.
That being said, anyone saying that old engrams won't be new items in the next DLC is either a troll or a fool.
Now start saving!
Edit: in case this topic gets big and it gets lost in the topic, it should be mentioned that saving Cryptarch packages will net new items after the DLC, but faction packages are pre-determined.
Edit 2: people are pointing out a reddit post that says the opposite of what I am saying. I can understand why people would choose to believe that. After all, I am trying to get you to believe me. I can tell you from first hand experience I received new items from old engrams.
If my word of mouth isn't good enough, look at it through a logical standpoint:
If the guy on reddit is wrong, that means you missed out on a ton of possible new items.
If I am wrong, you at least have a ton of legendaries to turn in to rank up your Cryptarch level.
Use your brain, guardians.
Edit 3: a Interesting trend going on. I noticed that people say that they got old items from old engrams. I will believe them because I expect them to believe me. If this is true, I need to discover why this is. I know I got new items from old engrams. This is an irrefutable fact for me. Nothing you guys can post will change what I received.
I can't prove that I only got new stuff, just like how you can't prove that you only got old stuff.
I will look into this more and try to find out why this happened.
Edit 4: I found an interesting reason to why this might have happened.
If this reason is true, it is pointless to start saving right now.
Here is the theory: there was an update a week prior to TDB being released. Engrams found during this time frame will be new items. However, engrams found prior to this will be old ones.
Why? Because the week before TDB they literally patched all of the new items in the game, but they were locked. So if you got an engram during this time it had a chance of being a new item only after the DLC was unlocked.
Not sure if this is true, but definitely going to look into it more. It would explain why some people got old stuff while some people got new stuff.
People who got new stuff from old engrams, did you start saving after this patch but before the DLC?
People who got old stuff from old engrams, did you start saving before this patch?

You must be new and forgot about the people who saved engrams before The Dark Below dropped.
