Edit 5: Please read all other edits before making a comment saying I am trolling or lying or whatever. I am really trying to be helpful. Also, it might be helpful if more people with plenty of vault space can test these theories. I am going to start saving now, but if it gets too full with desirable engrams, I will get rid of the less desirables and start saving the week before the HoW is released to be able to see if this explains why I got new stuff and some people got old stuff.
Saving your engrams for the DLC is a good idea because they will be new items, not old ones.
I saved up prior to TDB and all of my items were new items.
Anyone saying otherwise is hugely mistaken. They might be thinking about before when they updated how the Cryptarch decrypts engrams.
Back then, purple engrams had a chance to be blue items. And blue to green. They updated it so an engram can only be that color or better. If you saved legendary engrams prior to this, it would still have a chance of being a blue item.
I am guessing that is where all the engram confusion came from.
That being said, anyone saying that old engrams won't be new items in the next DLC is either a troll or a fool.
Now start saving!
Edit: in case this topic gets big and it gets lost in the topic, it should be mentioned that saving Cryptarch packages will net new items after the DLC, but faction packages are pre-determined.
Edit 2: people are pointing out a reddit post that says the opposite of what I am saying. I can understand why people would choose to believe that. After all, I am trying to get you to believe me. I can tell you from first hand experience I received new items from old engrams.
If my word of mouth isn't good enough, look at it through a logical standpoint:
If the guy on reddit is wrong, that means you missed out on a ton of possible new items.
If I am wrong, you at least have a ton of legendaries to turn in to rank up your Cryptarch level.
Use your brain, guardians.
Edit 3: a Interesting trend going on. I noticed that people say that they got old items from old engrams. I will believe them because I expect them to believe me. If this is true, I need to discover why this is. I know I got new items from old engrams. This is an irrefutable fact for me. Nothing you guys can post will change what I received.
I can't prove that I only got new stuff, just like how you can't prove that you only got old stuff.
I will look into this more and try to find out why this happened.
Edit 4: I found an interesting reason to why this might have happened.
If this reason is true, it is pointless to start saving right now.
Here is the theory: there was an update a week prior to TDB being released. Engrams found during this time frame will be new items. However, engrams found prior to this will be old ones.
Why? Because the week before TDB they literally patched all of the new items in the game, but they were locked. So if you got an engram during this time it had a chance of being a new item only after the DLC was unlocked.
Not sure if this is true, but definitely going to look into it more. It would explain why some people got old stuff while some people got new stuff.
People who got new stuff from old engrams, did you start saving after this patch but before the DLC?
People who got old stuff from old engrams, did you start saving before this patch?

After the patch.

I think your edit 4 is right on the money, and the route I'll likely take.
-
Edited by corgi: 3/6/2015 10:43:41 PMLmao you're so wrong. I saved up 9 legendary engrams and all of them turned into pre-TDB vendor gear. Nice try. It works this way because right when you get the engram, the item you get is already pre-determined.
-
You must be new and forgot about the people who saved engrams before The Dark Below dropped.
-
Faction packages may be predetermined, but if you rank day one HoW that's a good chance at new gear. Get it to ~50 rep to rank and there ya go.
-
You can save your engrams and hand them all in when how comes out to level up your cryptarch and get new dlc packages
-
I saved my engrams and got the pre-dlc stuff.
-
Wolves is still a long ways off, and I'll just upgrade what I have. It's not the end of the world.
-
months away from wolves, also i play for the thrill of the hunt saving engrams is trying to shorten to the fun part imo.
-
To be honest, it's worth trying out for me personally. I don't need the armor or weapons anymore, so i'll save my engrams and let you know the results
-
Conspiracy theory. The guy on Reddit is telling you that it won't work because he wants to be the guy with the most new gear on HoW launch day. He clearly has loads of engrams stashed in his grans underwear drawer.
-
Were there any exotic engrams that you saved from before TDB?
-
Why is nobody mentioning exotic engrams. Anyone have any knowledge of them working too? I have an ass load of coins haha
-
I got old items. Idk maybe God hates me.
-
You can level up your cryptarch rep and get new items that way, but no.. saving old engrams won't give you new items directly.
-
Edited by Tomato Gravy: 3/6/2015 10:36:06 PMSave em if you want....its pointless though.....you wont get new stuff. Same thing with people "remembering" seeing exotic engrams drop......i guess if you really believe it, then its not lying.......didnt happen though And about using your brain....its much more beneficial to open them when you get them.....chance to get something you can actually use between now and how.......rather than save them up just to dismantle..... But hey if you need to manufacture something to look forward to....go for it.
-
I got new DLC items from the engrams I saved up just before the TDB drop. Just to add backup to your claims.
-
So much bull shit I saved so many engrams and cryptarc packages and they all turned into old items and you are also wrong the cryptarc change of getting blues from legendarys etc was well before TDB was released
-
My engrams were all old items when TDB launched....look at all the old posts on this subject as well, don't save your engrams, it's a waste
-
Sounds like only cryptarch packages will give you new gear.
-
I understood that everyone who saved engrams for the dark below received old 300 gear. Dont know what you're talking about but I think your full of shit
-
I started holding packages at the postmaster, storing Legendary engrams, and the materials that you can turn into the Cryptarch for 200 Glimmer (Ex. House Banners) in order to get ready for HOW. Whenever it comes out, it will be like Christmas. :)
-
Edited by Prime: 3/6/2015 10:10:08 PMIt's what I'm doing with Vanguard/Crucible/Cryptarch/Faction packages. Though it's damn tempting to open them. Edit: By looking at the comments and then doing my own research, I decided to just open the dam things!
-
Had 2 helmet and one gauntlet engram in my vault to do this but my hunter need some new armour

Hmm.. Ok. None of mine worked that I saved from pre dlc. All turned into materials.
