So recently I came into a Suros Regime. To be honest I'm a scout rifle guy, but I was still excited to get what many consider the best auto rifle in the game. I thought at the very least I could use it in PvP (as I prefer auto rifles over scouts there).
I wanted to see how much of an "Upgrade" Focused Fire really was so I collected some data last night and to my dismay discovered that the Focused Fire "Upgrade" is actually a NERF.
I first went to Cosomodrome and did some timing of how long it took me to empty the mag (both with and without focused fire). What I measured was that the Rate of Fire (Rounds per Sec) decreased by approximately 43% from ~7 RPS down to ~4.8 RPS
Next I hopped over to the crucible and captured some damage data. Focused fire only increased the damage by 30% for body shots (from 20 to 26) and by 33% for head shots (from 24 to 32).
NOTE: I think the actual increase is 33% which would put the body shot at 26.666667 which is truncated down to 26.
Even a 33% increase can't overcome a 43% reduction in RPS.
I know the argument that the slower rate of fire will allow you to do more headshots. While that is true, it would require what 50% of your shots be headshots in order to reach the non nerfed DPS.

When you fire shot by shot, instead of just holding down the trigger, you fire way faster and with all the benefits from Focused Fire. This is common knowledge between SUROS Regime Users. However, with the recent nerf, SUROS Regime has lost its status as the absolute beast it once was. It's still effective, sure, but there's no point in using it when you can simply switch to the "sniper cannon" Hawkmoon or the "two shots and poison from across the map" Thorn.

i have 3 SUROS, i use one for pvp with no upgrades and have a maxed one for pve and Iron banner
-
Or to put it simply 124 damage per second with focused fire 140 damage per second without focused fire.
-
Is Deej gonna address this?
-
They should give an option to equip focused fire or hip fire, like on the abyss defiant auto rifle, from crota's end.
-
the real power behind suros in pvp is the ability to alternate the fire on a target.
-
In the iron banner it works better with focused fire but for regular crucible I use my non upgraded one.
-
It used to be a good gun. No longer...
-
You're dumb. It's called focused fire for a reason, it's easier to hit criticals. Without the focused fire it's harder to hit all head shots but with focused fire it's easier
-
It was amazing before all the nerfs. Suros has had 3
-
That's why I have two. One isn't upgraded. ;)

Edited by Zoop: 3/4/2015 6:19:00 PMYou cant use purely statistics without factoring in player skill. The slower fire allows better accuracy. How much dps increase this will cause is different per player (one could argue that a player should be skilled enough to make all-crits in both situations, a bit unrealistic id say). You get more dmg per magazine, you get better accuracy, you dont need to reload as often, becomes more effective at a longer range. Those are all factors that need to be counted, not just flat dps. And then there is ofcourse preference. Oh, and on average, more than half my scoped shots are crits, something i couldnt do as easily with a higher rof.
-
I truly hate that perk. I wish i never upgraded it.
-
When you look at burst damage (dps within 1 magazine), then yes it is a nerf. Once you look at dps over a prolonged period (taking in effect the downtime from reloading), it actually isn't a nerf. It comes out to be about the same. From my calculations using two 300 suroses, one with the upgrade and one without, the burst dps against lvl 32 enemies of fast suros is 1339 dps. The slow suros is 1213 dps. Once you look at real dps by factoring in reload, fast suros is 906 dps and slow suros is 913 dps. Keep in mind these numbers do not take the "suros regime" upgrade into account, which you would have with the slow suros, but not the fast. For PvE I would use the slow suros with the perk. For PvP I would probably use the fast non-upgraded suros. For abyss defaint, the fast abyss did 1617 burst dps, while the slow did 1345. Prolonged real dps the fast did 953 dps and the slow did 938 dps. Seeing how you get to choose fast vs slow on this gun without sacrifising upgrades, I would choose fast abyss. But if you are using either of these weapons in PvE, then you are drastically holding yourself back. By my calculations, these 2 weapons do about 60% of the dps of the top weapons (Vex mythoclast, Saturn Rapier, TFWPKY 1969, and a few other scout rifles). If you have to use an autorifle, you should choose vision of confluence against even lvl32 enemies as it does 84% of the damage of the top weapons. Much higher than suros and abyss.
-
I actually think this is what made this weapon such a beast before it was nerfed several times. The dmg increase plus getting 80-90% HS instead of mostly B/S is a huge boost in dmg. Trying to compare total DPS vs actual DPS is stupid. Actual DPS depends on the skill of the shooter. Just because you can put more bullets down range doesnt mean you helped if only 25% of them hit the target.
-
Of course it takes longer to empty the mag with ff on!! Lol, it makes the gun FIRE SLOWER
-
It feels like a nerf now that the gun has actually been nerfed along with other Auto Rifles. The SUROS used to crit 45 damage each shot before any nerfs, now it's down to 32. Focused Fire's main benefits was never just the added damage. Less RoF = More stability, and easier to land shots, which effectively increased its range as well.
-
It's a distance weapon regardless, you aren't using her for her ttk
-
I think this was pointed out months ago. At least on my abyss I can choose not to use it but not sure of the damage difference on that one.
-
So how did u get the focused fire data and the non focused fire data with one suros lol?
-
Edited by robofighter4: 3/4/2015 5:53:38 PMYou're forgetting the added benefit of gaining access to other upgrades including damage and range increases.
Though I see what you're saying.
-
Good post! Bungie will probably take this into account now.
-
Been saying this before the patch, have an upgraded suros for pve. Then have 1 un upgraded for pvp.
-
It allows you to aim at much further ranges and allows you to be more effecient with your ammo. The SUROS just got nerfed too hard is all.
