The FAMILY MAN struggle

Any other family peeps out there have to balance Destiny with work, kids and a wife/girlfriend? My wife puts up with Destiny but it's mostly because I don't play till kids are tucked in and read to and I try and watch a show of my wife's choosing before jumping on. Stay on late get up early... Worth it! What is everyone's ritual for getting to Destiny without getting in trouble with the family? Edit: I love that I'm not alone in this. I can't believe how many people have the identical schedule as mine! Must be why I always find good randoms when I'm on, we are all family men. #destinydadsunite Edit: We got our first Toxic Troll response. So I would like to give the award for biggest buzzkill to SEANY, You earned it bro. Edit: WOW GUYS AND GALS!!! I woke up to hundreds more comments and 99% of them are positive! It's amazing to see so many good family peeps finding a healthy balance between gaming, work and family. You people are amazing and I'm not sure I've smiled so much reading these posts. Edit: over 1000 replies!!!! Nice to see so many awesome people out there and hardly any trolls! Stay real guardians.

  • i know the feel! maybe not so much as you do, but between classes. working, my girlfriend, and a side hobby of breeding bearded dragons the balance can be hard sometimes. I really enjoy Destiny so i do try and make an evening or 2 for Destiny.

Plus she gets her day ( or two you know how girls get) but rules are Tues is reset day (nightfall/weekly) and Thursday's are raid days. she cant bother me and my son on these days lol. The other 5 days happen however they want them to lol .

  • I do the same thing. The only way to pull it off is to sacrifice sleep. I average 4-5 hours of sleep when I play and I play about 5-6 days a week.

  • I find it very difficult to juggle family and destiny time. Luckily my kids are no longer younger and really only need me for a ride nowadays. I also coach lacrosse so there goes my evenings and Saturdays. My wife has agreed to allow me to game on Sunday's. So we get up go to church eat a big brunch and essentially all go our separate ways. Mine is into the den with PS4

  • So I have a near- 2 year old, and we're expecting our second child in...*does the math*...two weeks and two days. My wife has been nesting like crazy, and has been staying up till past midnight. She's nuts. I play when she goes to bed, but she's been outlasting me for weeks now. No time for me then! Last night I was convinced I was going to make it. But 3 hours of assembling a dresser (aided by my toddler "helping") later I was done and ready to knock out.

    • I work a full time job. No kids. My wife travels 3 days a week and works all day selling Mary Kay make-up. She spends times with her girls and travel, and I get to smoke aliens. Life is good.

    • Yea my wife tries. I piss her off all the time with it. I try to wait for my 2 kids to be in bed but on reset day I usually hop on at 4pm and play till dinner than hop back on till bedtime. She puts up with it I guess you could say.

    • It's all about planning, planning, and planning. For example, my wife watches TV shows I don't want to watch, but I've asked her to save them up for a couple evenings per week so I can get raids in while she watches her shows. I also get up before her and the kids, so I get my bounties in before going to work. I must stress that it's very important to prioritize family. My daughter is 5 and definitely notices when I'm playing too many video games. They're not young forever and you don't want to miss it! Managing family and gaming is all about perspective. Are you going to have three 32s with every exotic weapon? Probably not, but that's okay!

      • Raiding is about the only thing I have trouble finding the time for. I sneak crucible time in half hour blocks during the day sometimes, but I have to wait until her and our son are sleeping to raid.

Im single but i can tryy to imagine... Raids would be tough, getting a solid chunk of time with no interruptions would be really tough If they dont play they just wont understand why u cant pause the game Id say the best bet would be late at night but thats also...
prime babymaking time :p
Nevertheless, one day ill be doin the family life, destinys great but thats priceless:)

      • I'm married with four kids. I work all day, do the family thing until kids go to bed. I let the wife decide if she wants to watch a movie or whatever. After that, it's Destiny time. Sleep deprived? Yes. Worth it. Absolutely. Family comes first.

It was hard in the beginning, I've tried to balance Destiny, Work, Family, and School together. I haven't been playing as much recently and I'm glad to say I've been managing my time much better now. I work 6-8 hours a day, part time school, in a 6 year relationship with my girlfriend, I volunteer for my church (I play lead/rhythm/acoustic guitar), and I would have this horrible cycle of getting on when I can at night and sleeping as late as 3-4 am, then getting up at 7am for work, as it's a 30-40 minute drive with traffic. Gotta bee-line through Seattle. That said, I have over 1000 hours in Destiny :/// I no-lifed it hard in the beginning.

      • With the exception of pre-determined raid nights, I'm stuck waiting for the wife and kid to rack out for the night. Sometimes I can sneak on during nap time if I'm not working...

      • Play when I'm not at work, no kids, wife hates when I play, gf doesn't care. j/k. I seem to play when I get home and promise myself it'll just be for an hr. 5hrs later I'm finally turning it off. I won't let my self play at all if the gf and I have any plans that day. It just never works out for me.

I was playing a lot and my fiancee sat me down for "that chat" a few months ago and she very nearly bought a new television so I could play "elsewhere"... Since then, I play in the mornings before work and do family work before getting on. Baths, supper, game time. It helps that I play Destiny with my two eldest stepsons and so they ask their mum for me!!! The payoff is that I get to do my nightfall and weeklies fairly easily. The downside is that I don't get to complete raids in one sitting - a real problem but that's life. That's with 5 kids so it can get hectic.

      • The struggle is real... I love participating in this cultivated reality... But truth be told it can get in the way. Bungie has done a great job of making it plausible to maintain access to all the activities... I have come to realize that many of the milestones I have kept up with and sought out weren't vital to me being able to enjoy destiny. Raiding is a blast but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to balance that activity during the week. Raiding is probably the most lucrative in game activity available, so it compels a large majority of the user base to engage in raiding. Realizing that raiding is a self perpetuating activity doesn't have any real impact on where my time is spent. Because I am here to play cooperatively (and raids are the best co-op we have!) I go where my friends are... So whether or not I would choose the activity for myself makes no difference. I end up there because that's where my friends are. It would be great if the game compelled players to do other things as much as they are compelled to raid... Problem is there is just no visible incentive to fire up a story mission on the highest tier of difficulty... I would (and do) do it for the sake of doing it. For me bounties and potential rewards are just a framework to engage a fun game. But most people are driven to seek rewards above gameplay. So given the choice people gravitate to the rewarding activity. Don't get me wrong I love raiding, but it would be great to have activities on the director that directly competed with raids in terms of rewards... Preferably something that couldn't take less than 20 minutes but would never be longer than 40.

        • I'm pretty much in the same boat you are. I only play after the kids are in bed and usually after I watch some TV with the wife. But, I have been able to get a level 32 Titan, 31 Titan, and a 30 Hunter. I have been able to play the game enough to do well. I hit the strikes and the raid once a week and do a few bounties here and there.

          • Feel that. Usually have dinner and time with our pet bird. Then destiny. We live together. She hates when I stay up until 4am. But I agree, so worth it.
