The FAMILY MAN struggle

Any other family peeps out there have to balance Destiny with work, kids and a wife/girlfriend? My wife puts up with Destiny but it's mostly because I don't play till kids are tucked in and read to and I try and watch a show of my wife's choosing before jumping on. Stay on late get up early... Worth it! What is everyone's ritual for getting to Destiny without getting in trouble with the family? Edit: I love that I'm not alone in this. I can't believe how many people have the identical schedule as mine! Must be why I always find good randoms when I'm on, we are all family men. #destinydadsunite Edit: We got our first Toxic Troll response. So I would like to give the award for biggest buzzkill to SEANY, You earned it bro. Edit: WOW GUYS AND GALS!!! I woke up to hundreds more comments and 99% of them are positive! It's amazing to see so many good family peeps finding a healthy balance between gaming, work and family. You people are amazing and I'm not sure I've smiled so much reading these posts. Edit: over 1000 replies!!!! Nice to see so many awesome people out there and hardly any trolls! Stay real guardians.

  • I work shifts one in every three weeks I look forward to as I'm on afternoon shifts so I stay up late when I get home and get up early when the wife is in work and my kid is around one of our parents (he's to young for school) this is my gaming week :-) The only other specified days I get are ''Gaming Tuesdays'' when my wife goes to dance for the evening and I get on Destiny at 7pm with my clan for some raiding.... I look forward to these days :-) Any other time is a random hour here or there when my wife has gone to bed early or is out with her friends for the evening. It can be hard sometimes as gaming is my passion to keep a happy balance my sleep suffers the most but its a sacrifice that I chose to make ;-)

  • Three nights a week, work nights for my wife, I could get on by 9 and be done by 12am, but she often camps on the sofa where I play. So if I'm not able to nicely convince her to go to bed, then I set my alarm for 5:30 am, when she goes to work, and get up and play. This early morning game time is variable as one of the little monsters could wake up at any time before 7:30am, so I have to be willing to shut down in a hurry. I usually get Friday nights into Saturday morning to really game, but it's a fine line as I watch the kids all day Saturday. If I'm tired they will sense my weakness and really run me into the ground. It gets really tiring trying to sneak in game time, but I run with what I get.

  • I too know the struggle. ..up till 2am on weekends only to get up early the next day. I do get a long session on Tuesday since it's raid day as a preagreement.

Struggle is real mate! I tend to squeeze an hour in at the end of the day, but don't want to neglect my family so I try not to take the piss.

  • Luckily for me, the kids AND wife go to bed at 8:30/9, giving me from then until about 12/1 to get stuff done. That happens only on the week days. Weekends I'm pretty much AFK.

  • I've had a lot of back and forth on this. My wife is not the happiest after 750 hours of gameplay but at least now she knows that Tuesday is raid day!! hahaha and that's what's priceless. I do have to balance how much I play atlas until a reasonable hour but man it's worth it....

  • This would work if the wife wasn't such a pain in the ass. Anything less than 7 hours of sleep and ass is grass. Realistically, she ain't happy if I get any game time in anyway. Oh well, priorities.

    • My wife hates it! (she's not into fps games) BUT she understands i have ADD & get bored and go stir crazy now & again, so she accepts me for who i am. Long day at work, i come home, unwind with some head-popping, vex killing, shank stabbing Destiny!! OH YEAH! Besides,.it keeps me in the house and away from trouble & blowing cash! And yes, she is happy (threw that in in case that curve-ball is tossed at me.)

    • I typically play when I get home and prior to picking my wife up from the train. Some nights I can get away with a little more, and typically I got some play time in on weekends. Balance is the only way, I don't want my life to be that wrapped up in gaming regardless of my spouse.

    • Both me and my girlfriend watch tv and spend time on the Internet, when we have kids, we'll be holding our children in our arms and holding a controller in our hands. When they grow old enough, playing with them will be just as fun (sports, camping, biking and gaming). Sounds like your wife doesn't like gaming which is cool... good luck to you.

    • Mondays and Thursday's are family nights, basically we watch all the DVR shows we need to catch up on. But in Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I get home around six we eat dinner and then watch a show together than I get on destiny around 7:30 and play till about 10:30 at night. Weekends depends on what chores I need to get done but i usually don't get on till after 7 at night.

      • First rule of thumb in marriage is happy wife, happy life! Luckily for me and my wife decided against kids so that frees up loads of time. My honey do list for the house takes precedence but I usually will play a strike or something, do a chore and then repeat. My stuff gets done and keeps the wifey off my back. I either stay on late after she's asleep or I'll play while she is at work. It hard not being so selfish with my time but it's so worth it when all is said and done.

      • It isn't just destiny but any game I would like to try and play. I have a 5 month old son a 1st shift working gf and I work 3rd shift. So my schedule is basically get home from work to watch my son, then I get about 2 naps before 4 then I have to try to sleep from 4 to 8 30 then I go to work and repeat. I used to be a hardcore gamer and switching to a lifestyle where I can barely touch the controller sucks but at the same time my kid is amazing and no regrets. The struggle is real for gamers at heart with a child but game on when you can and enjoy. P.s. Nice to see so many comments that aren't trolls or just toxic.

The struggle is so real. Last nite was a pure example of why its so hard. I get out of work 3 hours before my wife. Instead of letting me use that time to game before i get home she always has a todo list for me. Well i got home did her list and had 30 mintues left i figured id be safe if i jumped on with my bud and did the nitefall quick. She call ten mintues in to the mission to say she was on her way home. I told her that i was doing the nitefall with my bud who is more like a brother someone ive growen up with and went to school with. I told her after that id get off so we could go do what she wanted to. Witch was walk a mall with r daughter after i worked nine and half hours at work on my feet all day being a maintence person at a plastics factory. I love my job i do. But after her chores for me and work i would like a hour or so to just play a game. Well long story short we got in a fight bc i was taking to long witch then distracted me and got me and my bud killed 2 shots away from beating semptis prime. Witch we all know is a do over. I apologized to my bud bc she wouldnt let me retry. And had to get off my game, r talk was long and i felt bad but i had to tell my wife i needed me time after a hard day. All this happened in 50 mintues. So i feel u.

          • i know the feel! maybe not so much as you do, but between classes. working, my girlfriend, and a side hobby of breeding bearded dragons the balance can be hard sometimes. I really enjoy Destiny so i do try and make an evening or 2 for Destiny.
