Precursors from Halo;
A 100 billion year old empire, came in many different species.
Have created life
And have used the flood to destroy it
Possibly created the universe(s) as a whole.

The precursors are the flood. All that's left. Perhaps pre-war however they attempted the impossible to save themselves and their genetic makeup became defective. No precursors exist however their rampant counterpart the flood do.
