A few days later, Paul is seen walking up the stairs to his apartment, whistling the tune that Holly sang on the fire escape. He has mail in his hands, and we see that he has received a check for the sale of one of his books. Happy with the good news, he knocks on Holly's door, telling her that he's sorry for the other night and that he's come to make up. She lets him into the apartment, and he asks if she's seen the newspaper recently. As it turns out Rusty Trawler got married to his fourth wife, and as Holly found out later, he actually had no money for himself. In fact, he was $700,000 in debt and it was only his family who had money. As Holly states, Rusty Trawler turned out to be a super-rat, and she says to Paul that if he was rich, she'd marry him in a minute. He says the same to her, although his response has a more serious tone, as if stating that he would marry her now if he could.
