I read the beginning of your post and already see it's wrong.
We did grind trough VoG, CE, Nightfall. But we also did weekly. We grinded EVERYTHING, just like you.
You got it as a random drop during one of these activities. We bought it with strange coins when it randomly was for sale. We both grinded.

Depending on how many characters you have, 1/2/3x CE, 1/2/3x VoG, etc (nightfall, weekly). Everybody grinds just as much as the OP. The OP doesn't realize that people that buy from Xur are people like him, which also grinded the game. He got it during the grinding, we got it AFTER the grinding.

Technically you'd have to do 2 weeklies to get enough coins for the coins if that's all you do for coins.

So what of the other 20 ways to get it to drop such as legendary engrams and what not. In a game based on luck nothing is earned only lucked in to. Thus the existence of that phrase
