I've been looking for theories on Destiny, and found and excellent topic on the Fallen and the Hive https://www.bungie.net/fr/Forum/Post/77224413/0/0), and because the comments begin to be overwhelmed by the number of answers, I'm writing a new post.
I've seen people talking about the Fallen bleeding light, way for us to see that they aren't as bad as we think, and may have been blessed once by the Traveller. Their name, as we all found out I think, was given to them when the Traveller left them. From that point, points of view begin to diverge. I think the Fallen fought the way we are fighting right now, but failed protecting the Traveller, who had to "run" away from the Darkness. The Fallen would have then earn their name by falling under the influence of the Darkness. I've seen people talking about a race of explorers, by looking at their ships. I think it's right. Except for the Walkers, which are truly war designed, their ships are not that harmful. And about the Servitors, by reading the Grimmor, you can see they are robots built by the Fallen, most probably during their Golden Age, to produce ether and help them survive in hostile environnement (explorers remember ?) and some of them to be use as big library or computer, to store informations (in one of the patrol mission on Venus, you have to kill a Servitor who is stealing knowledge in the Ishtar Academy). Now, the Fallen are scavenging for tech, either our and their, maybe to recover their old power from their Golden Age.
A last thing. In one of the Grimmor cards (don't remember which one sorry), Cayde-6 is fighting along a Fallen against the Hive, back to back. He had finally to kill her (yes her) but thought she force his hand to do so. They can be trust, at least against the Hive. I've seen theories as we would fight later along the Fallen against the Hive, that would be so cool !
I personally think that the next DLC, House of Wolves, will bring a new Fallen faction in the game.
Please give me your opinion about all that in the comment !
That's it ! Forgive me if I did english mistakes, but I'm no native, and I'm still learning this language !
P.S : I'm probably going to expose my other theories on the other races, I will add the link below if I do so.

Dude I think that was pretty good. Personally, I love the Fallen. I'd fight with them in a heartbeat. I think that the term "fallen" in this instance can be compared to Fallen angles. The angles made a mistake against their provider (God) and were banished. I think you may be on to something. The Fallen betrayed the Traveler in some way and they were banished, however, keeping their divine (so to speak) forms.
